My 5th and 6th graders will be using F&L 6 next year but I REALLY want to ditch the workbooks. Any suggestions what I should add that would be engaging for them?? Just reading the book doesn't seem like enough.

We use F&L too. It's required by our parish for Faith Formation. I've been told by a fellow homeschooler, though, that the online F&L is a lot more interesting because it incorporates music, prayers, and mini "field trips". Also, I heard that each chapter takes just a fraction of the time to do.
I'm planning to do the online F&L with my kids this year, and supplement with various living books - such as saint stories, God's Love Story, The King of the Golden City, The Illustrated Catechism of the Catholic Church.
I'm also planning to do the Great Adventure Bible Timeline either this year or next with them. Occasionally we'll find a faith game that we really like, too.
Overall, though, I like to teach the faith my living the faith - going to mass, going to adoration, praying together, serving at church (my 10YO is an altar server and my 6YO is a junior greeter - when he cooperates LOL), celebrating the Liturgical calendar and feast days, watching seasonal shows/movies (Easter and Christmas, especially), etc.
My 10YO loves the faith, but he really can't stand F&L. I've even brought up that concern to our parish priest. The Church is so alive and appeals to the senses. F&L is, well, not so alive. Even I wonder sometimes how the material can be presented in such a dry way.

I only had a minute yesterday, sorry for the brief response. Still tight on time, but wanted to expand by saying I bought the used teacher guide for grade 1 several years ago but barely used it with my first grader, instead just reading aloud and having my son narrate, per MA. I love most of the MA suggestions, but we too found the student text alone very dry. However, when I looked in the spring at the guide I realized how much richer this is intended to be. For instance, in the section about the miracles of Jesus, the students are to read the first paragraph, then the teacher reads aloud several miracle stories from the Bible, going back and forth to the text, Bible text, and discussion. Then another day, perhaps, or the same day depending on if you do catechism one or many days, (or CCD, or religion daily in Catholic school) there is a suggested craft or activity to go along, sometimes with info in the back or a copy master. I found it really fleshed out the student text. I recently realized that this was an original guide, and the ones for the revised and third editions have much much more which i guess justifies their expense. Of course, they are meant to be used 1 per teacher, maybe 3-4 per grade at a parish rather than at a home. I did not buy the 2nd grade one but wished to. I may find the 3rd grade one used if I can, as I'll use with at least 5 children. There are also the new family guides for multiple grade levels. I think they are meant to be used by parents whose children are in CCD at the parish, but they do look to have some good suggestions - you can see a sample of each book at the Ignatius F&L site. Family Guides
We do a lot more with additional books like Jesus and I, picture books, etc., and my son reads the Big Book of Bible stories which is Biblical text with prayers, illustrations and Catechism, so I'm not sure if the guide is necessary but it would definitely be a help. We are using Faith and life more as a supplement and to make sure we know what is being covered by the parish. Hope that helps!
