Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

i have the catholic mosaic booklist, but where i live i dont have a good library, especially for books in english but even to look for alternatives in italian and i dont have a big enough budget to buy all the single story books, and the idea of only adding one or two a year saddens me a bit

SO i am looking for recommendations for collections of stories that follow the liturgical seasons (not saints), for very small children.

thanks!

Rachel,
I'm not sure if there is something exactly like you are looking for unfortunately.

As you realized there are lots of saints story collections. There are also lots of books that follow the liturcial year but cover more traditions and activities (though those also overview the feast day or holy day thus covering the year that way).

This Inos Biffi, An Introduction to the Liturgical Year is very good for covering the Liturgical year with the stories and teaching about it, but it is geared to a little older audience.

One for the Marian feast days of the liturgical year - Our Lady's Feast's by Sr. Mary Jean DOrcy, which includes her beautiful papercut illustrations. But not for really young ones either, language and vocabulary is not preschool directed.

Fr. F.X. Weiser's The Holyday Book is great as it covers everything well but not a story book per se. He also has a Easter Book and Christmas Book.

There have been some positive recommendations for the Michael Hagues Easter here in past threads:

We have Michael Hague's Family Easter Treasury and have used it A LOT over the past couple of years. Great stories (such as The Selfish Giant and The Maid of Emmaus!) poems and the gospels.

It's illustrated and good for read alouds for youngers, but this year, the older girls will be reading stories from it on their own.

Just got our copy this week, what a beautiful book. I love books with tassle bookmarks. We're going to use it during our weekly teas for the rest of Lent .

If I had limited availabilty and budget my focus would be on collecting Catholic resources over time. There can be theological difference in text even if subtle, though the materials may be visually very attractive. The second two books in question seem to be published by a Waldorf publisher. Waldorf is the educational philosophy/method associated with Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophy which has elements that are not compatible with Catholic teaching. For more information about the cautions related to Rudolf Steiner and anthroposophy see the About Us section - Toward Educational Philosophy for Family

I was continuing to think about possible recommendations for this thread. One that came to mind today is Tommie dePaola's Joy to the World which is a compilation of three of his best Christmas stories. It is lovely and perfect for young children as a read aloud.

thank you, that was all really very helpful, and interesting, too.

i think, in the end i am coming to feel as you suggest, that i will have to gather slowly, though i may get those two collections for this year. i am really grateful for the guidance i am finding through this forum because i feel so overwhelmed by choices that i know not very much about.

if you think of any other collections please let me know!
