Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The Greek term ‘polymath’ referred to a person who had expertise in a number of different
subject areas. Is there a more contemporary figure that you believe deserves this term?
What specific contributions has this figure made to his or her fields of research?

Ds17 is entering an essay competition at his sister's Liberal Arts College (aiming at Gr 11 & 12 students). He has chosen the above topic to write 2500 words.

Ds is keen to write about JP2 but we haven't done alot of research on him Could it be said that JP2 has made specific contributions to his field of research? If so, we'd love some pointers to start us on our way, much thanks

I don't know if this is what you mean but I would say JPII's Theology of the Body is a major contribution.

a list of JPII's works on Amazon

his Theology of the Body audiences

Hoping so, we've been googling to see if JP2 comes up as a polymath, however haven't found him on a list yet.

Famous polymaths such as Leonardo da Vinci are fewer these days. Leonardo was an artist, sculptor, mathematician, inventor, many 'strings' in many subject areas.

we're trying to argue that JP2 had many strings too. His contributions to theology, meditation, poetry, history/politics, The question is, are these contributions (and whatever else we don't know of yet) enough to qualify him as a polymath? Anyone know?

He was also a playwright and actor, apparently quite a good one but gave it up to become a priest.

I think so. He played such a huge role politically in the fall of communism.

You know who you might contact regarding this would be George Weigel. Not sure of the best way to contact him, but I can try to find out for you.

He re-energized the youth of the Catholic Church by promoting and attending World Youth Days.

He also made many, many papal visits to countries around the world, and was a respected world leader and diplomat.

If you can't get in touch with George Weigel, his bios of Pope John Paul II are excellent (there are two volumes; the second deals with his funeral and the election of Pope Benedict, but also includes useful info on Pope John Paul II's papacy and legacy).
