Today during his visit to Cuba, Pope Benedict is making a pilgrimage to the basilica and shrine of Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre to mark the 400th anniversary of this image of Our Lady discovered by three fishermen in a Cuban bay.
While familiar with the title of Our Lady of Charity, which is the English translation, and what the image looks like, I had forgotten it was associated with Cuba. She is the patroness of Cuba under this title. Here is the story of the statue.
With the Holy Father's visit there, a nice opportunity to share this story with our children and invoke her intercession today.
Was looking for a coloring page or something extra to do, but not having any luck. Add anything you find that would be good resources or activities.
And for literature: Ernest Hemingway has a connection to the shrine, having spend much time in Cuba, and his book, The Old Man and the Sea, references the Virgen de Cobre. In 1953 he won a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and in 1954 the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Quote:
He dedicated the medal (Nobel Prize) to the Cuban people. He placed the medal in the sanctuary erected to the ‘Virgen de la Caridad de Cobre’, situated in a small town near Santiago de Cuba. |

Nice find, Mary! I love learning about all the titles of Our Lady and hearing all her stories. Like any good mother, she is very busy.... sees all, hears all.
Our Lady of Charity, pray for us!

Ladies,
With the Feast of Our Lady of Charity just passing (Sept. 8th) we have a new website up for the National Shrine to Our Lady of Charity here in Miami. There are some great links and information about this title of Mary and about the Cuban people.
Of course this being close to my heart I thought I'd put the link up for anyone who wants to learn more about it.
Also, the video at the bottom of the Home page show our dear Bishop Augustin Roman who passed away earlier this year explaining all about the vision of "La Ermita". It is in Spanish with English subtitles, but is a wonderful explanation. Also this holy man's cause for canonization has already been opened so it is a wonderful opportunity to actually see a video of someone who might one day become a saint!
Here is the link: La Ermita de la Caridad

Thanks, Mimi.
So tell me about the "ermita" = this term is all over the place for me now having just been in Spain and there are ermitas everywhere. It is a hermitage, correct? But here it seems to be a bigger sactuary. So this is a particular hermitage where Our Lady is housed?

Mary,
Yes, Ermita means little hermitage. Traditionally it was a little cove type location for a certain statue of Our Lady, or even a saint in some regions. There is a cove like area in the large sanctuary at the church and this church is considered a mission church with no parish community. The thought behind that was that all of us of Cubans would take care of it through donations and being part of the church community while being in our own parishes.
As tradition states, we go to visit La Ermita at least once a year, usually in September to honor our dear Lady. Also as Cuban American women we honor Our Lady around our wedding times as well. Back in the days when Cubans were fleeing Castro to Miami, the brides would bring their wedding bouquets as a gift of thanks to our Lady after their weddings. There was no money for receptions and such so the couple would go right after the wedding.
Now a days, a few days before the big day, the bride brings flowers to Mary and offers her future family to her care.
My mom went on her actual wedding day, in the limo and everything:) I went a few days before and remember my poor only English speaking soon to be husband being very overwhelmed with all the questions the little old ladies were asking him. These ladies sit all day long in the church praying for Cuba. Many have been widowed and love to see the future brides bring the flowers.
OK, what a long post for a super easy question!
