Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Bishop Puts Confirmation before Communion, Wins Pope's Praise

This is a short but very interesting article. I have always felt that Confirmation has been misused as "a way to keep kids attending CCD" or "taking on our Faith as an adult". However, I seemed to be on an island with my thinking.

I hope that this is a future trend and more Bishops do this!

Our Bishop has done this for the past 9 years. Confirmation in Grade 2, Reconciliation early Grade 3 and FHC late Grade 3.

It is very encouraging that the Pope made a point of praising this. I saw mention of the Pope's praise of Bishop Aquila today on Whispers in the Loggia blog. I think it has been almost a decade since Bishop Aquila had made this change in his diocese. Bishop Aquila is a former Denver priest, good friends with several homeschool families here. Good shepherd.

It was interesting though that he was singled out as individual there are several other diocese that have restored the order as well. According to a 2007 survey, restored order is found in 30 dioceses (some full and some by parish) and is being considered in many more. And it's probably more since then. But I believe he was one of the first that set the others in motion, and he did issue the pastoral letter “Send Forth Your Spirit" which got lots of publicity. And maybe he is the only one of the current Ad Limina visiting US bishops group who had done this.

There are families who have gotten permission in our archdiocese to do this - though not the norm. I know our Director of Evangelization and Cathechesis is leaning this way, but obviously without a bishop currently, nothing would change (and many wonder if Bishop Aquila will be appointed and return here as our Archbishop...)

A couple other diocese which have the restored order of the sacraments of initiation include:
Diocese of Phoenix and Marquette

Here is a nice Q & A about the Restored Order from CUF.

We are officially in the Tucson Diocese, one mile from Phoenix Diocese. My oldest 2 had the opportunity to be confirmed with their homeschooling group the first year Bishop Olmsted restored the order. What a privilege! My youngest two will unlikely enjoy the same privilege.

Love,
