Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Our son is making his first communion in a few weeks and we would like to get him a missal. Is there one for children? Or is there one at all that is nice but doesn't cost a fortune? English and Latin side-by-side would be nice but we almost always attend the Novus Ordo so it doesn't need to have the Extraordinary Form (though that would be a nice bonus, I guess).

Am I asking too much here?

I have not found one for children, but I think the Daily Roman Missal by Scepter/Midwest Theological Forum/Our Sunday Visitor is my favorite. My sister compared other ones and thought this was the best.

It also has the order of the Mass with side-by-side Latin English.

The hardcover versions are sold on Scepter Publishers's site (but sold out right now) and the bonded leather and real leather are on Midwest Theological Forum's site. Amazon lists most of these, not all are prime, just be careful the date is 2011 and 3rd edition.

Hope that helps. I have one here in burgunday bonded leather and I love it. The downside is there are gold leaf edges on the pages, and I haven't found a cover yet to keep it safe.

Our son made his First Communion last year, before the missals came out and this was what I WANTED to get him and haven't yet.

Thanks, Jenn. I had seen that one in my searches but wanted a more personal recommendation before purchasing.

I just came across this very nice looking Sunday Missal. Looks like it would make a nice gift.

FYI there is no such thing as a missal that has both the Ordinary and the Extraordinary Form together --that would be a REALLY big missal as they are two completely different missals. The Extraordinary Form uses the 1962 Roman Missal the Ordinary Form the 1969 (revised 2011) Roman Missal. If you see Latin in a new missal that's because what we have in english is a translation from the latin but the reading are not the same for the EF and OF (Well, there are a few instances where they are but not in general).
