Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Also what are the differences between the masses: Tridentine, Norvus Ordo and Latin? Are there any others? I am really confused
Is one more 'true' than the others?
Thanks!

Hi Marcy!!!

I'll confuse you more and give you more terms, but perhaps it will work out.

The Roman Rite Mass before 1969 was all in the Latin, universally, and is sometimes known as the Tridentine Mass because its main form was established from the Council of Trent.

After Vatican II, a newer form of the Roman Missal was promulgated in 1969, which could be said in Latin or the vernacular (so in America, in English). This is the Mass of Paul VI or also known as the New Order of the Mass, in Latin "Novus Ordo".

So usually when someone says Tridentine Mass or Latin Mass, they are referring the 1962 Missal, before Vatican II.

Novus Ordo will refer to the Post-Vatican II, but prayed in Latin instead of English.

When the Apostolic Letter SUMMORUM PONTIFICUM was issued by Pope Benedict, more particular terms were used to differentiate the two masses.

Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite is following the Roman Missal of 1969, promulgated by Pope Paul VI. The Roman Missal is going through a 3rd translation, but this still would be the "Novus Ordo".

Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite following the Roman Missal promulgated by Bl. John XXIII in 1962. This is the "Tridentine" mass.

Hope that helps!

There are two forms of the Mass
Ordinary Form (also referred to as Novus Ordo in Latin or Mass of Paul VI)
Extraordinary Form (also referred to as Tridentine).

The EF is in Latin as a matter of course, but the OF can also be done in Latin, though that is not the norm. When someone talks about attending the Latin Mass they would most likely be referring to the EF/Tridentine.

They are both approved forms of the Mass for the Roman rite.

ETA: See, Jenn posted while I was writing...

Though apparently "Tridentine" is a misnomer
Quote:
"In fact there is no such thing as a Tridentine liturgy, and until 1965 the phrase would have meant nothing to anyone. The Council of Trent did not 'make' a liturgy. Strictly speaking, there is no such thing, either, as the Missal of Pius V. The Missal which appeared in 1570 by order of Pius V differed only in tiny details from the first printed edition of the Roman Missal of about a hundred years earlier."
