Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The Liturgical Year by Dom Prosper Gueranger O.S.B.

Jenn or any of you Liturgical Year experts, are you familiar with this series. I happened on it at my local Half Price Books and even had a coupon with me. I feel like I've found a treasure, but I was hoping to hear from someone who has the books. It's kinda funny too because I gave up Half Price Books for Lent and this was my first trip after Easter.

Suz,

I would buy it! If it's really half or more off the price, it's a good deal. But if you don't think you'll read it, maybe you should refrain.

This set is a classic. St. Therese's family would read aloud from these books. Dom Proper Gueranger played a huge role in the "Liturgical Movement." This is from the Directory on Popular Piety and Liturgy:
The history of the renaissance of liturgical worship reserves a special place for Dom Prosper Guéranger (+ 1875), who restored the monastic life in France and founded the abbey of Solesmes. His conception of the Liturgy is permeated by a love for the Church and for tradition. The Roman Rite, he maintained in his writings on Liturgy, was indispensable for unity and, hence, he opposed autochthonous forms of liturgical expression. The liturgical renewal which he promoted has the distinct advantage of not having been an academic movement. Rather, it aimed at making the Liturgy an expression of worship in which the entire people of God participated.

Catholic Encyclopedia writeup

Written in the 1840s, some things have changed, of course, but he was remarkable for defining papal infallibility and the Immaculate Conception a few decades before they were declared dogmas of the faith!

Be aware that he does cast somewhat disparaging remarks on "the Jews," and many Eastern and Orthodox Christians attack him on his views of Liturgy. But that's using current views to apply to the past.

Here's my true confesion: I own these volumes (actually, I'm missing a few, as I bought at a used sale) and I have rarely touched them. I find the text stilted and lengthy and forget to pick them up! I have several other liturgical year commentaries that I prefer, mainly because the language isn't as flowery and old-fashioned to me.

Just read some of the quotes below to make up your mind:

Liturgical Year Preface

History of Lent

Mystery of Lent

Practice During Lent

History of Passiontide and Holy Week

Mystery of Passiontide and Holy Week

History of Paschal Time

Mystery of Paschal Time

Practice during Paschal Time

Third Sunday of Advent

Fourth Sunday in Advent

The Immaculate Conception of the Most Blessed Virgin

After digging up those links, I found this page which lists these and a few more. Sorry!

HTH a little. Bravo on your find!

Jenn - You are WONDERFUL!!!! Thank you for going to all that trouble, it was very helpful! I'm afraid the "will I really read it or not" rarely wins over finding a great bargain! Hence the reason I needed to give up Half Price Books for Lent.

Thank you again for taking so much time. I think I've seen you mention your favorite liturgical year resources (most recently your fav cookbook). I need to get those titles on my "Must Buy If I Find" list.
