Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dd (13) has chosen her Confirmation saint...and she of course needs to do a report about him. Our parish library doesn't have much to offer. Do you have any recommendations?

A Man for Others - P. Treece was very good and my students enjoyed reading it. I really cannot compare since it is the only full length book I have read on him but it was interesting and kept their attention.

I wish I had a good book to read on St. Max, but honestly I haven't actually read that much on him.

Here is what the Book Store at Marytown.com has listed for St. Maximillian. I would imagine that this is a pretty fair list of what is out there. I am sure you could call them and get a better recommendation.

I do love St. Maximilian and his inspired Knights of the Immaculata. I am designing a dish cloth right now to honor him and I have made many St. Maximilian chaplets.   He is such a saint for our times. I just love the quote by Pope JPII:

Fr. Maximilian Maria Kolbe, was a shining figure because of his strong love with which he consecrated his life to the immaculate Virgin and because of the heroic gift of his life for this brothers, that sacrifice which led him to his terrible death in the bunker of Auschwitz. He remains with us as a prophet and a sign of the new era, the era of the civilization of love. ~Pope John Paul II

Good Luck! and what a great confirmation Saint!!!!!!!

Nancy,

My husband did his senior thesis on St. Maximilian Kolbe and his influence on Catholic Journalism.

We have quite a few books on him here at home.

We have the one Aagot recommended and these others:

1. Forget Not Love; The Passion of Maximilian Kolbe by Andre Frossard (Ignatius Press) This is a wonderful book that tells all about his life and early influences. Very Vision Book like.

2. St. Maximilian Kolbe; Apostle of Our Difficult Age by Antonio Ricciardi OFM Conv. (Pauline Press) This is a translation of the Italian Biography of the saint and has some wonderful pictures of his life and original drawing from the Polish men that knew him.

3. Maximilian Kolbe: Authentic Franciscan by Fr. Anslem W. Romb OFM Conv. (Marytown Press) This is a series of Essays and homilies and commentaries about St.Maximilain given by Fr. Anslem. He is the English speaking authority on St. Max and writes all about his life and the road to canonization as well. Pictures too and some of the above book are footnoted.

4. The writings of St. Maximilian M. Kolbe, OFM Conv. by Fr. Anslem W. Romb OFM Conv. (Marytown Press) This is exactly what it says, a collection of St. Max's writings. Beautiful timeline and a wonderful commentary about a man that was so ahead of his time in the Journalistic world.

5. Kolbe and the Kommandant: Two worlds in Collision by Ladislaus Klaus O.C.D. This book is amazing! A wonderful history book that puts you into the reality of the world that St. Maximilian was living in at the time of WW2. It tells all about the world and what was going on as well as how St. Max changed it:) It has the homily that Pope John Paul II gave at his canonization as well as pictures. Wonderful Living book.

Hope that helps and my husband too has him as a Confirmation Saint. Our fourth child is named after him as well and we are very devoted to his intercession.

BTW when our friend's daughter chose St. Max as her patron saint, she chose the Italian form of Massimiliana Maria so you can tell your daughter that there is at least one other young lady with St. Max as her patron saint

Totally off topic, but Mimi, I am targeting you to test knit my St. Max pattern. I know that you can do it! :) AND, I know who you will be praying to if you have trouble....
