Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I need help choosing. My daughter came to me recently saying that she would like a bible upgrade. She has had the New Catholic Picture Bible for the past few years along with the Egermeier's Bible Story Book that we had picked up previously. She has read and re-read them and now that we are reading through the family Bible together she wants one that is more comprehensive.

I have been slogging through reviews and have just gotten more confused. Here are some that I have come across:

Breakthrough!: the Bible for Young Catholics - based on the Good News Translation by Saint Mary's Press. I thought that the this translation was not accepted by the Catholic Church? Of course children's bibles are typically paraphrased anyway, so how big of a problem is this?

The Bible for Young Catholics - I can't find a preview on this one and it is only 352 pages so I am thinking that this may not be what we are looking for.

The Catholic Youth Bible - This is the NAB version but they also have an RSV version. Also by St Mary's Press. It looks to be geared more towards teens and I'm not sure if the commentary would be appropriate.

The Golden Children's Bible - Still not sure if it is in depth enough. I do like that there isn't any commentary though.

Are there others that I have missed?

My dd10 received the First Communion Bible-BABRE- St Joseph Edition for her FHC and really loves it. It is the full bible but in a good print size for her, includes some colour pages in one section. The mysteries of the Rosary, and the Stations. She received this at age 7, and once she began reading more (probably around 8) she reads it most nights.

Thanks Erin! I hadn't even considered the First Communion Bibles, although I'm not sure why not! I really like the additional sections that it provides.

I also ran across My Big Book of Catholic Bible Stories. I originally passed it by because of the words "Bible Stories" assuming that it would be too young. After a closer look though it appears to be taken straight from the NRSV with some quotations from the CCC as well.

We actually gave our son the Bible, not changed at all. We do read about the Bible, but his catechesis for Communion encouraged receiving the Word of God in its entirety.

So Ignatius Bible, RSVCE, 2nd edition is the version he received.

An alternative would be giving her the actual New Testament and Psalms or just the New Testament and choose another source for relaying the Old Testament, which needs more explanation. My son really enjoys reading the Golden Bible, which is wonderful in relaying the Old Testament.

I would steer clear of the Good News. NAB is what we get in Church, but it's not great. RSV-CE is currently the best, although the older Confraternity is quite beautiful.

This is a great idea Jenn! I think I may do this. It is the Old Testament that I am not sure I am ready for her to be reading on her own yet. So the idea of getting the New Testament and Psalms for her personal reading combined with our family reading of the Old Testament should work perfectly!

Thanks for the clarification here. I get a bit muddled when it comes to choosing between versions. I keep referring back to your sticky. Maybe we need one on available children's bibles for the different age groups too!
