Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello!

I have a six-year-old son who will be doing first grade work next year (he's our oldest, paving the way for all of us!). Last year, each week I tried to pick a Scripture verse for him to memorize from one of the upcoming weekend readings. We'd review it daily (if we were so diligent) and then at Mass on Sunday would remind him to listen carefully to hear the verse. I think we probably should focus on just one a month, for better retention, but even to have read the Sunday Gospel in advance is helpful in gaining his attention during Mass.

I wasn't as consistent as I wish I'd been in pulling out a Scripture each week or reading through the Gospel, and I'm looking for something this year that already has that planned out for me, preferably in a book form instead of online. I could use this next month to do that, I suppose, but if there is something out there, I'm willing to buy. Does anyone know of anything like this? Also, activities to go with it would be a bonus!

One of our courses, Catechism-A, is designed for 6-9yr olds and has weekly memory work correlating to the lesson. It is all online (sorry!), but there are printable weekly checklists which have the memory work on them. (Also, not all of the memory work is scripture; about half is Baltimore Catechism answers.)

I hope you find what you are looking for!

The CHC lesson plans for early elementary have "memory gems" listed- one a week. Some are Bible verses, some are lines of poetry, some are clever sayings.

I have found that doing just Bible verses for memory did not capture the attention of my young children as much as a mix of Bible verses and other material.
For example, one from CHC that they really liked is:

The Church is big,
so dim, so still
where Jesus stays all day.

I think you must be lonesome, Lord.
I'll slip inside and pray.

Using our "mix" we memorized one per week last year (36 total). The CHC lesson plans, especially older editions, can be bought fairly cheaply on Cathswap.

I use The Complete Children's Liturgy Book with my kids. We read it through a bit before Mass, discuss, and then talk about it again after Mass. Each week has an activity or coloring page to correlate. Easy and works well for us.
