Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A while back I wondered what we would do the year after my son made his FHC. After all the lovely advice I received, I decided to do a year dedicated to learning about the Mass, while also continuing the study of the catechism, reading Catholic Mosaic books, and reading the Bible together.

I found a lot of help on this thread.

So here is what I ended up purchasing:

- The Miniature Mass Kit from Our Father's House, which includes lesson plans.

- Jesus Speaks to Me About the Mass

- Learning to Follow the Mass

- The Mass Explained to Children

So I would love input on how to translate this into a successful study. Which would work best, first. Should I aim to do one lesson with the Mass kit a week? Every other week? One or two pages of reading a day from the books? Obviously the missal type book is more for reference and use when we attend the EF Mass.

Is doing a Mass study once week too little? I was hoping to spread these out over the whole year.

We attend both forms of the Mass as a family.

Okay, direct me, ladies. I am clay in your hands!

When doing a Mass study (I schedule one around every FHC) we normally have a once a week hands-on family session on Fridays with additional age-appropriate reading on that particular part of the Mass being done earlier in the week. I started to separate the reading and hand-on components so that my children could learn at their level while still incorporating family activities but it also provides them with unbuilt reinforcement and review.

I'd be inclined to use the Mass Kit lessons as a guide to form units on the Mass. Then I'd use the number of units, the amount of material for each unit and the time you wish to spend to determine how many lessons to do a week. Remember to consider any extras you may wish to do during advent, lent or other special seasons and feast days while making your plans.

ekbell,

Thanks for the reply. I was sort of thinking the same way, about using the mass kit lessons to guide the study and the readings to supplement. But I don't want to jump all over the book, either. I guess I will concentrate on reading a few pages from the Montessori book every week, possibly with narrations from the oldest if I can get it out of him, and doing the Mass kit lessons in order once a week, too. Then just reading the other books when we feel like it and leaving them around for the kids to enjoy.

If case anyone is interested how I decided to work this out, I decided to come back here and post. I hope it's fairly CM. I am still trying to work out the logistics of what CM works out to in daily life.

I decided that the seven year old and I will read one section of The Mass Explained to Children, twice a week. It will be a very slow, careful study. I might have him narrate it occasionally. On two other days a week, he will do his catechism lesson from the Baltimore Catechism.

On Friday, at least the 5 year old and maybe the 3 year old will join us and we'll read one page from Jesus Speaks to Me About the Mass followed by one of the lessons for the Mass kit. There are only a few lessons, so we'll keep doing the same lesson for like 10 weeks, just a little bit of practice and handling the items each week.

That sounds like a really great plan, Krista!!    It does sound very CM to me! It allows for a slow and careful reading of the books (because they are quite rich!), and still makes room for the variety of books you have! PERFECT! Now, you might still find ways you'd tweak how you implement and that's TOTALLY FINE! But, you're off to a great start! I like your book selections a lot!!

Thanks, Jen.

I am pretty sure you suggested at least one of them to me. So thank YOU. :)
