I was reading In Memorium: Charlotte Mason (thanks, Jen)
and I came upon this quote:
"From the age of twelve or so they read a Life of Christ in verse; they seem to recognize that the poetic point of view helps them to realise the Divine life, in itself the epic of the ages."
Anyone know of this Life of Christ in verse?

Could it be this one?: The Heavenly Voice; a life of Christ in blank verse

I've never been able to find them, Theresa, but I believe Charlotte Mason wrote a six volume set of Christian poetry and this is what she is referring to when she refers to "a life of Christ in verse". According to my notes from reading, in Form IV (grades 8 - 9), in the Fall 1921 programme, the students read from Volume V of CM's volumes of Christian poetry. The entire set is titled, The Savior of the World.

Ah! That makes sense. And the ages line up (approx) as well. Thanks!

The Savior of the World online
It's in progress. Volume 1 is said to be complete, but with a few broken links...choppy, but there's a sampling.

Sorry, I looked closer and it seems to have been an abandoned undertaking.

I wanted to recommend an alternative, just in case you'd be interested, Theresa.
Garlands of Grace: An Anthology of Christian Poetry - Ignatius Press.
It's a fantastic (but small) anthology. One of my absolute favorite poems is in there, written by Karol Wojtyla (Blessed Pope John Paul II):
Quote:
Her Amazement at Her Only Child
Light piercing, gradually, everyday events;
a woman's eyes, hands
used to them since childhood.
Then brightness flared, too huge for simple days,
and hands clasped when the words lost their space.
In that little town, my son, where they knew us together,
you called me mother; but no one had eyes to see
the astounding events as they took place day by day.
Your life became the life of the poor
in your wish to be with them through the work of your
hands.
I knew: the light that lingered in ordinary things,
like a spark sheltered under the skin of our days -
the light was you;
it did not come from me.
And I had more of you in that luminous silence
than I had of you as the fruit of my body, my blood. |

Also, I love Poems - G.K. Chesterton...which is a free read on your kindle!

That In Memoriam is awesome!
What ages do you think this verse was directed? Older?

I have two OOP books that might fit a little of this.
One is Gospel Rhymes published by Sheed and Ward in 1934. This is a mixture of verse by various authors:
Frances Chesterton
Marigold Hunt
Fr. C.C. Martindale, S.J.
T.V. Nicholas
Fr. Leonard Feeney, S.J.
Christopher Hollis
Maisie Ward
Michael Trappes-Lomax
Margaret Feilding
Fr. Vincent McNabb, O.P.
They are for a younger audience, not adults, but they are wonderful!
An older volume I found recently is entitled A String of Sapphires, subtitled: Being Mysteries of the Life and Death of Our Blessed Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ Put into English Rhyme for the Young and Simple. It’s written by Helen Parry Eden, Tertiary of the Servants of Mary, Copyright 1920, Burns Oates and Washbourne.
I have an excerpt for Feast of St. John the Baptist. I found it delightful. Unfortunately, I couldn't find it online anywhere.

The poetry volumes that CM wrote she included in her religion selections for ages 12 and older.
