Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I thought you all might be interested to read about the custom of the Altar of Friday of Dolores.

It is a centuries old custom of the state of Guanajuato in Mexico where altars are set up to honor Our Lady of Sorrows on the Friday before Palm Sunday. Many items are included as symbols along with food, especially sweets, to sweeten Mary's sorrow. I wish the picture was bigger but this was the only one I could find.

Our friend who lived and did mission work in Guanajuato had a altar in her home for us a few years ago. It is also considered a sort of little "mardi-gras" day before the rigors of Holy Week. There are picnics and parties and visiting of altars. According to our friend, some of the more professional altars in business buildings were as large as a whole room.

The transalation was done by google....it has its problems but you can get the gist of what items and colors are used and their symbols.

Aside from the partying, which I don't think we'll start as a custom , I think the idea of remembering a special day for Mary's sorrows is cool.

Oh Gwen, thanks for this description. I was just looking into ideas to commemorate the sorrows of Mary for Friday. Your post inspired my own google search and I came up with this article about the customs and symbols which is a more readable translation.

And this site has some beautiful pictures of examples of the Viernes de Delores altars.

Does anyone know of a picture book or children's story that focuses on the seven sorrows?

I don't know of any books but here's a site about Our Lady of Sorrows and some info about the tradition of altars.

We really should start a list of books we want someone to write for our posterity. There are some wonderful writers among the children of CCMers (hint hint Willa ) who could be working on some new books!

I'm coming to this thread a little late...I was pondering and looking around for my few Marian picture books (to no avail)...but I don't think they have any. It's too bad.

I'm not Willa, but I second that idea. We have artists among us, also. But how hard is it to get permission to reprint gorgeous works of art to illustrate text?

There needs to be a glorious picture book on St. Joseph. Why isn't there????
