Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can you all tell me your favorite children's Bible for K or preschool? BTW, I have really missed you all this week! I bought ALL of my curricula last week and couldn't ask for final advice!      I am so happy with all the choices though!

We have the New Catholic Picture Bible. We purchased it years ago and it has taken us through pre-K, K, and 1st grade. Now my son has sort of outgrown it and is on to something a bit meatier. We still use it for the other kids, though.

It is pretty wordy for the very littlest ones, though.

I bought two New Catholic Picture Bibles. Following a suggestion from CHC (I think!), I cut up one and made laminated picture cards out of the the pictures. Each "set" of cards is on a different color of background paper (loosely corresponding to Jeff Cavin's Bible Timeline Band, if you google "Bible Timeline Band" you can download a .doc file that has the time periods and his color scheme). I made ring books out of each set. Each card is also numbered on the back in chronological order.

The children learned a lot just by putting first each set in order and then ordering two or three sets at a time.   You can also choose main events from each set and have the children order them. Once they think they have them in order, they just turn them over and check to see if the numbers are in the right order. If not, they try again!

The age range for this activity is about 4 (just a few cards at a time) to 8 or even older (more cards).

This is a fabulous idea! We love creating different rings. Thanks, Caroline.

While it's not Catholic, my son devoured and reread to the point of knowing all the stories in the Beginner's Bible. I don't like the cartoony pictures, but the stories are written in a captivating way.

This was our companion during preschool and early reading. We would bring it to Mass and he would compare the readings in his Bible.

That is a great idea Caroline! I think CHC suggests buying a second one to cut up and use to make a timeline, but the cards are a great adaptation. We have used it for first grade but with one copy and make a narration book with illustrations by my son. I liked the idea but wasn't sure about cutting it up. I really like the idea of making the cards, as my son read the Great Adventure coloring book on his own, going through the New Catholic Picture Bible as he went and finding the same stories and reading them.

There's a new Bible out by Maite Roche, called The Bible for Little Ones

Ignatius produces it and Magnificat also sells several children's books by the same author. It more for the prek crowd, as it is board book style, but there are several sentences per page.

We have the Catholic Bible for Children . It's not as simplified as Bible stories that target one or two year olds. There's a lot more substance to the stories since they're more detailed. It is divided in such a way that it goes through the Stations of the Cross, and it does point out when Jesus gave us the Eucharist, and that the Apostles recognized Him in the breaking of the Bread after He rose. It doesn't skip the stories of the early Martyrs, Stephen, Peter and Paul. I think it's a nice stair step into reading directly from the Bible for young children. However, the illustrations are large, colorful, and detailed so it can hold the interest of 2 and 3 yr olds, but they're not exactly the prettiest drawings.

We also have The Catholic Book of Bible Stories . The pictures are very nice. It's a smaller book so it's easy to tuck in a purse or diaper bag, and it has coordinating crafts in the back. The illustrations for the story of the Last Supper show Jesus breaking the Bread in the same manner that the priest does during Mass, but it sums up the Passion with a few paragraphs.
