Hi,

Can someone help me with this?

What is Passion Week? I have been searching the internet, and all I get is that it is the week before Holy Week ( the last two weeks of Lent combined being "Passiontide").

I had not heard of this before, but we got a Catholic calendar, and when I changed the month to April today, I saw it mention Passion Sunday, Passion Monday, etc. ( and somewhere in the recesses of my mind I remember the term Passion Sunday) I searched New Advent, and elsewhere, but only keep finding out that the Sunday before Palm Sunday is Passion Sunday, and the week before Holy Week is Passion Week, but not what it *is*.

Some Protestant sites have Passion Week/Holy Week being one in the same, but none of the Catholic sites do.

Anyone?

OK - where is Jenn? She probably missed the post. Anyway from what I understand the term Passion Sunday did refer to the 5th Sunday of Lent (Sunday before Palm Sunday) previously. That was changed after Vatican II, I believe, and now the terms (Passion and Palm) are used interchangeably for the 6th Sunday of Lent in the Catholic Church.

This article on Catholic Culture's page has some information about Passion or Carling Sunday. And this one on Pease Porridge for Passion/Palm Sunday. There is also info on The Women for Faith and Family page about Passiontide. Very interesting stuff here. I was intrigued by the devotion of the Seven Sorrows of Mary on the Friday of Passiontide. We are gathering here with other homeschool families for praying the Stations together that day, and I'm going to incorporate this.

The Fr. FX Weiser book, The Easter Book, has info on Passiontide and Passion Sunday.

I made a mental note to answer this when I came home from PA and promptly forgot about it. "Passion Week" would be two weeks before Holy Week. Can't add much more to Mary's terrific post, except you can read Father Weiser's Easter Book here. It's funny all my different missals and calendars refer to Sunday of Holy Week in different terms. Passion Sunday with Palm Sunday in parentheses seems to be the most common, but the USNCCB site had this title: "Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord"...how's that for filling in all the blanks?

I see the wisdom in combining the two...the solemnity of having ONE Holy Week is reinforced. "Dragging it out" over two weeks seems create less emphasis on the Passion.

It is extremely confusing when you read the older books refer to names we don't use. In our home, if I want to do any older traditions that relate to Passion Sunday or week, I add them to Palm Sunday.
