Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Let us give thanks for the wonderful blessing of a new beata!

Pope John Paul II will be beatified on May 1, 2011: Divine Mercy Sunday!

How beautiful.

(Perhaps this would be a fitting place to talk about how Pope John Paul II impacted our lives as Catholics. If you have a memory of JPII that you would like to share, please do so here!)

I remember when Pope John Paul II became pope. At school, we learned about how physical, fun, and brilliant he was ... and he certainly didn't disappoint.

I remember my Polish friends, the Piotrowskis, being delighted in having a Polish pope.

I remember first looking at him and thinking how strong and capable and manly he looked and how I wanted to be his friend.

And he has been. Well, now that he's in heaven, I get to talk to him. : )

I'm so happy to hear such news ...

Yes, this is very exciting news. It doesn't seem possible that he died 6 years ago. This reminded me of the time when he died and we kept a bit of a virtual vigil here over those days. For those who are newer to the message board, you might be interested to read this thread: What do we do? - a lot of wonderful memories and insight shared there .

I was 14 and a freshman in high school when he was elected pope. I can joyfully look back to the times that I had the privilege to see John Paul II and be touched by his presence. When John Paul II came to the United States for the first time (1979) – the first Pope to do so, he celebrated Mass on the Mall in Washington DC. We were living in Northern Virginia at the time and my mother and father, recognizing the huge significance and opportunity of this, took our family – braving the HUGE crowds to see and hear him. We saw him again when he came to Denver in 1993 for World Youth Day. I was a young mom with a toddler and preschooler at that time. We helped out at our parish with host family housing and were given tickets to one of the events where he spoke outside of the youth events. Those are treasured memories.

I'm half Polish and have a maiden name that ends in "ski" also . This was huge. It really was a VERY proud time for Poland and people of Polish heritage. I grew up with a lot of Polish jokes being said and fun made of the Poles. This event put this very brilliant and holy man in the limelight for over two decades and he did so much to wipe away that stereotype. Not to mention all he did for Poland - and the world with his spiritual role against communism.

We should definitely focus on incorporating this topic into our family lives and curriculum this spring. I'm going to dig up the other threads on JPII - celebrating feast days, making a notebook and compile them in a linking thread.
