Edible Monstrance picture
Oh do make a big due over this.
I have become much more prayerful just before my father's death (12/29) and afterwards. I was thinking about the main focus of our faith and how we still have baby Jesus in the Incarnation via the Eucharist. I thought it might be a teachable moment for my 5 year old to see and eat an edible monstrance - probably over his head but still I was very moved to make this. I was listening to catholic hymns. I made it twice because the 1st one burnt! Yikes! I used puff pastry and then afterwards I decorated it as you see here. My husband and son know I'm making a special dessert but they do not know what it is . It should be a special surprise tonight. I am anxiously awaiting tonight to serve it!

That's very neat!
I've only seen nonedible pastries on the St. Joseph's Altar, so I'm enjoying seeing this idea!

yes I was inspired by that. It seemed like such a waste to make an non-edible one that I would be afraid to store - would it attract mice? so I decided to make an edible one.
I am often inspired and then very very disappointed when I go to see art and especially edible art. I love love love sacred art and I usually think very foolishly that maybe there will be something of the sacred for my eyes to feast on but by in large there is nothing nothing nothing and so I decided to make it myself.

Lovely, Rosemarie. I've seen bread ones for St. Jospeh altars that would be edible, too.

I have a question that's sort of relevant to this. Next week is "M" week for Catholic Icing and I'm going to be doing a Monstrance craft with my preschool co-op. I was bouncing some ideas in my head about putting a Baby Jesus in the middle of the Monstrance on the "host" to try and get the point across to the children. What do you think? I'm never quite sure when I take something too far, and I don't want to offend anyone by doing something weird. Opinions???

I think it would be fantastic to put Baby Jesus in the center. I was inspired to make this by the very reference from the real catholic tv vortex episode on 'its the real presence' you can see it on their website or youtube. Despite all my catholic education I still thought that the Eucharist was a symbol until my dear father, my he rest in peace, corrected that notion when I was 23 yrs old!!! And despite my father correcting me many many years ago, apparently there was still that lingering child/adult child in me that didn't totally believe somehow until I saw and heard the vortex and it hit me square between the eyes. In that episode it stated that Baby Jesus is the Incarnation and we have the Incarnation in the Eucharist it went deep into my little girl intellect if that makes sense, like well we are complex and our childhood is still a part of who we are despite the intellect we have gained over the years. And so it was like, 'oh I didn't realize that' duhhh!!ANd so it was sort of a way of educating the little girl in me and maybe helping prevent my 5 yr old from having to go down the same road. Thank you for your wonderful compliments. My dh and ds loved the dessert and barely any of it is left. I was so very happy I made it and my 5 yr old son seemed to get it. He seemed to understand. I am very pleased. I am always hoping to see beautiful sacred art edible and non-edible in art shops and bakerys and I always leave so disappointed and I feel its high time that I start making my own. Thank you! I made this with love and I listened to beautiful catholic hymns while making this and prayed a lot. I feel it was a tribute to our Lord and I hope I get some brownie points upstairs for it.

How sweet, Rosemarie! I love sacred art, too, although I had not thought to look for edible art until you shared your photo today. Now I'll be looking!
When your son is a bit older he might enjoy learning about icons and how they are created. I've been blessed with the opportunity to see modern-day as well as older icons and they are just amazing. A great read-aloud about icons is Rumer Godden's The Kitchen Madonna - it's about a boy who wants to make an icon for his family's Ukranian housekeeper...and how he uses ordinary materials to create a true spiritual work of art. It's a chapter book, not a story book, but it sounds like you would really enjoy it!

Thanks, Rosemarie! That's so amazing that you could go so long without understanding the real presence. I'm glad you thought it was a good idea because the longer I've been thinking about it the more I really wanted to do it.
Also, (random) 4Real isn't sending my email updates when someone posts the way it usually does even though I checked the little box. Anyone else having this problem?

Often it's an individual email server problem. An individual member can have the problem when no one else is. I'll let Tim know, just in case it is on our end. And this is also a test to see if you get this one as an email.

Still not getting emails. Also, I made the monstrance craft, but wimped out on the Baby Jesus thing. I've actually had monstrance crafts coming out the wazoo here. I can't stop thinking of more ideas for making them! I've determined that any snowflake craft (and most sun crafts) can be translated into monstrance crafts. Mine will post next week. :-)

Nice ideas!
I keep thinking pizzelles would make a great monstrance edible craft. Might have to try that (if I can keep myself from eating them all --they're on sale at Aldi this week).
