Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 13 yr. old dd is wanting to read about St. Teresa, and I'm coming up empty. Does anyone have suggestions for her age? Thank you.

St. Teresa of Avila is such a deep, mystical saint.....any of the books we have mainly focus on her writings, which can be challenging reading even for adults. I'm not aware of any books about her that are geared toward younger souls. We do have a small book entitled Praying With Saint Teresa, compiled by Battistina Capalbo, published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co., which contains a forward and a short decription of St. Teresa's life.

The movie on her life is in Italian, dubbed in English, making it a little difficult to follow, but still inspiring...her life was challenging, which might make the film seem depressing at times to a young person, but her life was also very spiritually enriching.

Of the books we have, the one that looks a little less daunting (but still written with adults in mind) is: Selected Writings of St. Teresa of Avila, A Synthesis of Her Writings, compiled and arranged by Right Rev. Msgr. William J. Doheny, C.S.C., J.U.D. Associate Justice of the Sacred Roman Rota, copyright 1950 (most likely OOP). Maybe you could locate it through interloan through your local library. It might be worthwhile to borrow the movie on her life first, before delving into such a book (we were able to borrow the movie through our library interloan).

I am not sure what you think of a movie instead but EWTN has put a series out for children call My Catholic Family. They have a video on St. Teresa of Avila for children. I own a few of these videos and I am very happy with the way they handle the saints. They tell about them in a way that encourages and shows the child how to emulate them. They aren't terribly high budget in terms of animation but the content of what is covered is very good!

An out of print book but a great introduction and captivating biography is the old Encounter book by the Daughters of St. Paul Leaving Matters to God: The Life of St. Teresa of Avila.

If your daughter is a mature reader, I'd have her try reading St. Teresa' Autobiography. I think I started reading it around 13-14. I was quite moved at how human and accessible she was. Gave me much hope.

A classic biography of St. Teresa is by Marcelle Auclair, but you have to track down a copy.

There's also the F.A. Forbes book Saint Teresa of Avila which is well suited to this age group.
