I sure do dread the opening of the Da Vinci Code movie. The media is going to go into a frenzy There was an article on Catholic Exchange this morning giving a website devoted to preparing Catholics to defend the faith. The author is an ex-Jehova's Witness and the materials are free or low cost.

I never did read The Da Vinci Code...just stayed away from it...Do you think it would be helpful to read the book, to better be able to refute it? Thanks for this link, Gwen..

Jennifer,
Generally, I would recommend reading something like this in order to have more credibility to refute it. However, I could not get through the first few chapters because it is so vulgar. Honestly, I cannot understand the appeal! It is disgusting. The author is obviously obsessed with all kinds of perversity. There wasn't a section that didn't have some reference to s**.
Just my thoughts.

I don't think you would have to. I didn't but I did read the Da Vinci Hoax. It is detailed enought to give you the specifics from the book along with the info/apologetics to refute the claims.

No.
I'm one for reading a variety of material that I disagree with (based honestly on my strength and formation in a particular area) in order to have conversation with loved ones, such as books on education, religion, parenting, etc. This book is a whole different story. I put it into an extreme catagory. For example, I don't need to read Play*** to refute it!
Thank God there are so many wonderful Catholic resources to help us to be informed and to avoid the near occasion of sin.
Love,

My husband began reading it back when it was really a hot topic, so that he could see for himself what all the hoopla was about. He had to put it down in digust after a few chapters and advised me not to read it-it would make me too angry. It was particularly offensive to him, (in addition to all the many other reasons) for its portrayal of Opus Dei as a bunch of lunatics because his entire extended family is very much involved in that lay apostolate.
I also dread the movie premier and all the fanfare that will surround it. God help us.

Has anyone read The Da Vinci Deception? Our library has a copy of this, but not the Da Vinci Hoax. The Da Vinci Code has been traveling around our marina lately, though noone seems to be talking about it much... Is it because we are mostly Catholics here and are preparing for the release of the movie or is it rather like covering a bodice ripper with a brown paper bag cover - no one will see my guilty pleasure?
Once the topic does come up under the Tiki Hut, I'd love to be able to refute it strongly.

Oh dear I need more coffee and less interruptions before I post.
Our library does not have The Da Vinci Deception or The Da Vinci Deception but The Da Vinci Deception by Thomas Swan. Don't think I'll place it on hold...
Now I'm off to read the first link on this thread which I didn't have the patience to download earlier, but I should have as it appears to be just what I need.

Actually, I went back and checked and it was De-coding Da Vinci by Amy Welborn that I read. Our library has it as well as The DV Hoax and 4 different titles came up under DV Deception. I didn't realize Hank Hanagraf had a book about DVC; I'd avoid anything by him.

I received a great email today asking people to protest/boycott the Da Vinci Code movie by going instead to see Over The Hedge. It is opening the same weekend and the idea is to "vote" with our purchase of a ticket for the competition. Sounds easy and fun! I've heard good things about this movie.

One of the reasons I began to post Mary Vitamin daily Marian meditation was the Da Vinci Code. I didn't read the book, but I saw a Catholic website which began to refute its errors. There are so many errors, misrepresentations, blasphemy, I thought that "one liners" weren't enough to combat this problem. I thought, this is a job for the Immaculate. She can teach people the proper reverence for Christ and His Church and teach them about purity. I offer this as a suggestion, turn this over to the Immaculate. Let her teach your family members. Give them an invite to something like Mary Vitamin or some other apostolate that brings the true Faith to them and let the Immaculate do the work. When you suggest something, offer the suggestion as a prayer that She will teach, She will conquer hearts for Her Son.
I saw Johnette from The Abundant Life has an email letter. Perhaps, this could be a source of spiritual food.

Excellent advice Erica and Helen. An interesting thought I had today when I found out the protestant author Josh McDowell has a new book about the DVC is that there are many protestants who are in the position of explaining the book's errors about the Catholic Church and Christian history. Isn't that sort of ironic?
This website called Jesus Decoded looks good! It's funded by the American bishops.
Does anyone think the number of people who believe this novel is based on fact is over-estimated; or do most people really believe it is filled with facts? It seems hard to understand how so many intelligent people could so easily confuse fiction with reality.

Unfortunately, I have run across quite a few folks who think it is factual. Also unfortunate is one reason why- too many people believe that if they see it in print, it must be true. They lack the ability to discern fact from fiction for themselves and to think critically about what they read. Perhaps due to a fine public school education? Our Lord was so right when he called us sheep.

I have been reflecting on this topic. I think I will have three posts at Castle of the Immaculate (this is the first one.)
Since I thought this book/movie called for the Immaculate, I have been thinking about St. Maximilian Kolbe.
I invite you to "visit."

I just have to share my outrage with you all. Our local Catholic primary school is hosting the opening of the Da Vinci Code movie here in town as their fundraiser
I just can't believe it, I am in total shock.
