Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

THE PORTIUNCULA INDULGENCE

Noon August 1st - Midnight August 2nd

"During the early days of his deeper conversion and call, St. Francis repaired three chapels. The third one was popularly called the Portiuncula or the Little Portion, dedicated to St. Mary of the Angels and now enclosed in a great basilica.

The friars came to live at the Little Portion in early 1211, and it became the “motherhouse” of the Franciscans. It was the place where Clare came to the friars to make her vows during the night following Palm Sunday in 1212 and where Sister Death came to Francis on October 3, 1226. Because of the great things God had done at the Portiuncula, St. Francis requested the Pope to grant remission of sins to all who came to the Portiuncula with lowly and contrite hearts. The request was granted, and now the privilege extends beyond the Portiuncula to churches throughout the world. The indulgence - a remission of the temporal punishment for sin if all the conditions are met - may be gained from noon August 1st to midnight August 2nd through a devout visit to a parish church, a cathedral or some other oratory. An Our Father, the Creed and another prayer of one's choice are to be prayed. Reception of the sacraments of Penance and Eucharist, as well as prayer for the intention of the Holy Father (one Our Father and one Hail Mary), are to happen within several days of the visit."
