Our church is beginning to do 2 years Confirmation prep. The 1st year is pre-confirmation with the 2nd year being full confirmation prep. They felt the kids weren't well prepared with only 1 year prep.
Right now I am trying to determine if I want to have him take these classes at church beginning this year with a confirmation set for May 2012.
However...My son will not be 14 until July 2012 so would it be best for him to Confirm at age 13 (May 2012) or the following year at age 14..almost 15 (May 2013)
I don't think our Parish minds either way.....
Not sure what is best...
THanks
Debbie

There's a wide variety of ages.. here the Confirmation prep class is grades 6/7 so they start in grades 5/6.. but some are older (for a variety of reasons.. just moved here and hadn't recieved Confirmation yet or whatever).. so really anytime after age 11 here seems to be when Confirmation is.
My oldest was ready at age 11 without any problems at all.
My next oldest will be 12 or 13 just because of the Bishop's schedule for getting here (being every 2 yrs though might be 3 yrs this time)

In our diocese it is anywhere from 5th grade to high school - depends on the parish. Our pariesh it is 7th grade. I personally lean toward preference toward those earlier ages.

Our parish is small and will only hold Confirmation or 1st Holy Communion classes if there are enough children (about 6)who enroll for that year. I'm praying there are enough kids this year because my ds (15) and dd (7) really need and want these Sacraments.
I might have to look into classes at other parishes but would prefer not to do that as many parishes here (Rochester, NY) are very lax in how faithful they are to the magesterium. We attend a very faithful parish.
(some have commented that it's pre-Vatican II, it's so faithful; however, we see more new people nearly every Mass and have standing room only for Midnight Mass and the Easter Vigil Mass!).
God bless,
Mary-NY

Our diocese is 8th grade. I have always done all of the education and prep at home.

We do Confirmation and First Communion at the same Mass. According to our pastor, this is the original order of the Sacraments of Initiation. Our pastor thinks that the children need the grace of the sacrament as early as possible.
