Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Not sure which catergory to select here so I'll just put here
We have three children making their Confirmation in July.
Our tradition is to buy them a bible for this time.
Last time we bought The New American Bible: St Joseph Edition on the advise of someone we knew.
Our older children do not like this at all and I have to agree with them.
Before we were Catholic our best bibles were NIV versions and I love mine still.
As this is a big expence and we prefer to get a Catholic bible can anyone give us some advise on Bible choices and why you think the version is the one to get
Thanking anyone who can help
God Bless

The most accepted and best translation used today is Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition. Before the New American Bible was used, there was the Douay-Rheims and Confraternity editions, which you can still buy.

The key passage for me to sort out a good Bible is Luke chapter one, at the Annuncation. How does Gabriel greet Elizabeth?

The RSVCE is used by Ignatius Press, the Ignatius Study Bible, and the Navarre Bibles.

The Navarre and Ignatius Study provide commentary, and are both quite solid.

Hope that helps a bit.

I second the recommendation for the RSV Catholic Edition!

We have a Douay-Rheims, which I do not like, as it is so different to the Bibles I was used to as a Protestant, and I can see how the different names of books and characters and chapters/verses would complicate apologetics, although I have never really attempted that in any case.

We have the RSV Catholic edition and I like it much better and find it as readable as my NKJV which was my favourite when I was a protestant.

I gave my daughter this bible for Confirmation RSV Catholic Edition-zippered.

As well as being the recommended translation, it's a very handy size for throwing into a backpack, overnight bag or purse. The zipper (with Holy Medal pull tag) ensures that the bible will hold up to rough treatment (it also means that you can tuck in a couple of Holy cards if you wish).

My son, who is 12, saved his money to get a Douay-Rheims Bible. He reads in it every day. We also have more modern translations, but he doesn't like them as much.
