Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This thread left me wondering what you feel are the Catholic must-have books and items for your family?

For us, the basics are the Bible, The Catechism of the Catholic Church, some books of prayers and novenas, and a crucifix.

For us, the lives of the saints are a must have item.

We all love the Vision book series These books are fascinating, perfect for younger children and really make the saints come alive.

Right now we are reading "St. Anthony and the Christ Child" about St. Anthony of Padua. I never knew he was Portugese (I always thought he was Italian) or that his name was Fernando.

The stories are so amazing... and, best of all- true!

A Catechism, bibles, liturgical year calendar, internet access, prayer books with classical prayers, books about the saints, DVD/VHS player for movies about the saints and other religious or bible movies.

I always like these questions to ponder, but I do find it hard to narrow my list.

So far, I agree with all the ideas.

1. I use a lot of Catholic reference materials constantly, and like to have them onhand, preferably in book form, but there are quite a few online I use, too. I made a list of Catholic Reference materials

Not included are other catechisms and books by Father John Hardon, like his "Catholic Lifetime Reading Plan". I find I refer to his books quite often.

2. Resources for living the Liturgical Year: Basics:
Parish Church for Mass and parish support not too far, Mass readings like with the Magnificat, online, or Missal, and a liturgical calendar.
Books on supporting Catholic family life, information on liturgical feasts and saints days, and ideas of bringing them home into daily lives.

3. Sacramentals and Good Religious Art for use and display.

4. Books for all sorts of support for mom and Dad (prayer books, daily spiritual meditations like "In Conversation with God", and books for spiritual reading, which vary.

5. Books for the children. Favorites for this stage and going into the next:
Treasure Box Books
Father Brennan Series
Vision Books
old Daughters of St. Paul Encounter Series
Saint book by Rosa Giorgi

Now it would be harder to narrow the list to one for each category!

Jennifer, could you give more information about the Father Brennan Series? I'm not familiar with the name - what age group would his books appeal to?

Diana, I was evaluating Father Brennan over all the other books that in the category of Catholic devotional, instructional, inspirational stories for children. I'm just picking one out of many choices; these are just personally my favorite, mainly because I was familiar and really moved as a young girl by the same stories.

Rev. Gerald T. Brennan wrote many books, most famously for his Angel Food series. Jen and I compiled information in this thread.

I think they are great read-alouds for primary grades, and read alone for elementary age. They are perfect for companion to catechesis. I will especially be using them for 1st Communion reading.

For me, personally, I read these for many years, into 6th grade age.

So while this might not be in the top must-haves for everyone, at this stage in my family, these are a must.

Jenn,

Thank you for the information on Fr. Brennan. I am not readily familiar with many Catholic Classics as I was not raised in a practicing Catholic family, so I am always looking for recommendations that I can provide to my children.

For my own "must haves" and "must dos" so far:

The Footprints of God Series videos have taught us Salvation History, Holy Land Geography, Apologetics and Church History while also providing visually stunning photography.

Devotional Stories for Little Folks When we started homeschooling three years ago, these were among the first books we used and were our morning starting point along with the Daily Scripture Readings. They gave us a beautiful view into how a loving, Catholic, homeschooling family works. Even though my daughter has outgrown the target age range, we've come to feel as though we know the family members personally and we enjoy re-reading and come away with more each time.

Parish Children's Choir: this opportunity has far exceeded my expectations! Our Music Minister has patiently worked with the children to teach them about the beauty, history and liturgical richness of the Mass.

I just posted in the Angel Food thread, but thought I'd mention here that you can get a preview of one of the Father Brennan stories here.
