Thanks to the suggestion of our pastor, we want to make a grotto for our statue of Our Lady of Grace or for a plaster-type statue of Our Lady of Lourdes that we have. Regardless of which statue we use, we will be making it in the location pictured below.
I have been doing search after search to try and find instructions for building a rock grotto with no success. This is something that I really want to make with my husband and children. If anyone has made a grotto for our Blessed Mother or can tell me how to make one, I would really appreciate it.
I think that the Mary month of May would be a great time for us to begin.

I have no suggestions, but this reminded me of the Ave Maria Grotto, which is only about 45 minutes away. Brother Joseph Zoettl used any and every item imaginable to create the grotto and all the surrounding miniatures, even a toilet plunger!. The result is absolutely beautiful!

I found more information on Catholic Answers which gives additional search ideas. "Rock formation" and "rock wall" are bringing up quite a few possibilities on diy Network. I haven't seen anything that has a rounded roof, yet, but the wheels are turning.
The Ave Maria Garden looks incredible! Thank you for the link.

Christine I remember conversing with a lady on my blog, her father had made a grotto many, many years ago that was still standing and she was thinking of revamping it, but her father had made it from a bath originally and then glued stones on it.
If you could find a way to CUT a bath, I think it would be a great way to attempt such a thing...

I've been thinking....you wouldn't have to cut a bath, you could just bury that part in the ground, it will give stability and solve the problem of cutting an old bath!

Bathtub Madonna's!
I used to see these all over as a kid, then started noticing them again when we lived in Abilene, Texas.
I think I almost have hubby talked into making one.

I was going to say the same thing! I remember as a child seeing one in a neighbors yard and (even though I didn't know what it was, was brought up Southern Baptist) loving it. They had it covered in large blue/regular glass tiles with La Virgen de Guadalupe inside.
We live in an apartment right now and I have been trying to think of something we could do on our small porch, but if/when we are ever able to own a home I would like to do the bathtub grotto.
