Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My eldest two daughters, ages 10 and 7, have begun asking questions like "Why does God permit evil?" More concretely, why did God let my great-uncle die, why doesn't God stop wars from happening, and so on. Beneath it is the question of whether God is to be trusted, given that various unpleasant things are allowed to happen.

If they were a bit older I'd give them, for example, C.S. Lewis' The Problem of Pain. But they aren't quite ready for that, cognitively, just yet, I would think - and my library is mostly in boxes on the other side of the Atlantic (we're spending a year in Poland during my husband's sabbatical year).

Ultimately, this is something the Holy Spirit has to make accessible to their hearts, but I crave the wisdom of those here for any suggestions.

This is really hard, and I'm not sure I'm the right one to answer because this probably wont help . But, I'll give it a try. I tell my kids that first, God does not cause sin, it's in the world. But, if we remember that we are really made for the eternity of Heaven, not just our short life on this earth, it might give us a different perspective. Think of the saints. Many endured incredible tortures, sometimes they were abused for their entire lives, but the promise of eternity in Heaven gave them such great hope. I don't think God is aloof to the sufferings of people, in fact, I believe he blesses them with grace to endure whatever they are dealing with. But, He sees the bigger picture of eternity after this life.   I would tell my children that suffering makes God sad, just like a parent is sad when their child gets hurt. But God also knows that this life doesn't last forever and what is to come is so wonderful we will forget the sufferings.

I am thankful that this discussion has been raised (though there maybe past discussions that I haven't yet read through). The idea of suffering, to my girls, is quite hard to grasp and I, too, struggle with sensitive explanations and thoughtful responses.

You have good words Becky ~ suffering makes God sad, God does not cause sin, keeping our eternity of Heaven in our hearts...
