We have recently befriended a wonderful family in our town who also homeschool their preschool children. (remember, this is Germany) We have really cherished this relationship. They are Lutheran, which can mean many things, but in this case it means almost Catholic. They both studied Theology and love Cardinal Ratzinger..., but as Adelhaid says: "Lutheranism is in my genes." They truly live the liturgical year and have set biblical readings, as we do, but follow the older calender.
Now, I am getting to the point of this post.
We pray the Angelus for our midday grace in English, sometimes in Germa. When this family visits for lunch, then I am very hesitant to pray such an overtly Catholic prayer. Am I being overly sensitive here? or is it just common courtesy to be careful to not make a guest "possibly" feel uncomfortable????? Didn't Martin Luther pray the Angelus? You know, I could just ask Adelhaid herself, but instead I worry ahead of time probably for no good reason. But I would be interested in how you handle such situations in your home.
(Not to take away from other wonderfully, deep conversations going on right now, I just don't have the time at the moment, but I do love what is happening here!!!)

Well, I'm still a Protestant (sorta, kinda ) and I *love* praying the Angelus.
Do you know if there is any reason that it's prayed at noon? I just clued into why the Divine Mercy is at 3:00. Wow.
My vote is you ask your friend.

Hi Teri!
I did ask her, and she said she does pray the Angelus on occasion. So, we prayed as usual and then discovered that her version of the Angelus is without the Hail Mary.
I am still curious if you change your table prayers if non-catholics are present?

No, and I don't expect them to when we're their guests.

A couple places that have a little history and explanation of the prayer and its timing during the day.

Stephanie,
We say our normal prayers. If I know and am prepared when a guest comes, I try to have a print-out so they can read along if they wish.

Ditto.
Though for new guests I may say something along the lines of: "We typically pray the Angelus (say grace, etc)at this time. Please feel free to join us,or not. Whatever you are comfortable with."
