Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

As we go through our Jesse Tree stories, I'm thinking that there have to be good living books out there for each of these Bible stories. We've discussed that there are not necessarily enough "Advent" books out there and so we read a lot of Christmas books during Advent. There have to be plenty of "Jesse Tree" books that we either have on our own shelves or can check out from the library, right?

These seem to be common to the Jesse Tree recommendations I've seen:

1) Creation: "The Creation Story" by Norman Messenger
2) Adam and Eve
3) Fall of Man
4) Noah: "Noah's Ark" by Peter Spier, "On Noah's Ark" by Jan Brett...
5) Abraham
6) Isaac: I have a Pauline "KidScripts" book (OOP?) called "Abraham and Isaac" by Katy Keck Arnsteen, "The White Ram: A Story of Abraham and Isaac" by Mordecai Gerstein (anyone read this? It looks good...)
7) Jacob
8) Joseph: "Joseph" by Brian Wildsmith
9) Moses: "Exodus" by Brian Wildsmith, "Moses" by Margaret Hodges...
10) Samuel: "The Children's Book of Faith: The Call of Samuel" by William J. Bennet
11) Jesse
12) David: (I have the Little Golden book, "David and Goliath" by Barbara Shook Watson), "The Children's Book of Heroes: David and Goliath" by William J. Bennet
13) Solomon:
14) Jonah: (I have the Little Golden Book "The Story of Jonah" by Pamela Broughton), "The Book of Jonah" by Peter Spier
15) Judith
16) Mary: "Mary" by Demi, "Mary, the Mother of Jesus" by Tomie dePaola, "Mary, My Mother" by Father Lovasik
17) Joseph: "Good Saint Joseph" by Father Lovasik
18) John the Baptist

followed by the O Antiphons...

Please add any books you know and love!

Definitely add in the Inos Biffi books, The Life of Mary, Introduction to the Liturgical Year and The Way to Bethlehem for lots of Jesse tree coverage!

Remembering the Prophets of Sacred Scripture by Marianna Mayer is another one.

Colleen has many old testament stories listed here at Serendipity: Bible Stories at Bedtime.

"Saints in Season" by Ethel Marbach Pochocki covers Elizabeth and Zachariah, John the Baptist, Isaiah. It's out of print.

Another OOP is "Little Stories about God" by Mary Reynolds, I believe, printed by Daughters of St. Paul. That's one of my favorite renditions of Adam and Eve and the fall...the pictures are so lovely.

Also, Genady Spirin's Creation

and Let There Be Light by Pauline Baynes for Creation

1) Creation -
The Genesis of It All

5) Abraham -
The Sands of Abraham by Tamar Hugoboom (OOP - originally released through The Nazareth Shoppe Press)

17) St. Joseph -
Saints for Boys and Girls by Catherine Beebe (OOP)

General -
The Jesse Tree
The Jesse Tree: Stories and Symbols of Advent (not a picture book, but really nice. Inexpensive as well. You could buy 2 and cut out and laminate one set of the symbols as they are beautifully illustrated in this book)

I also wanted to include a link to many of Lauren Ford's poetry for reading along with Advent and then Christmas. Ms. Ford wrote and illustrated beautifully! Some of them are appropriate for reading during Advent and along with the Jesse Tree.
