Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Sorry if I've posted this thread in the wrong place but
I was hoping to find out more about this action that is taking place in America.
I have just received the email below if this is accurate I will be adding my name in protest. But for now need more information. Can anyone elaborate for me or knows about this??

Here is a part of the email without the personal details:
An organization has been granted a Federal Hearing on the same subject by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in Washington, D. C. Their petition, Number 2493, would ultimately pave the way to stop the reading of the gospel of our Lord and Saviour on the airwaves of America.... They got 287,000 signatures to back their stand! If this attempt is successful, all Sunday worship services being broadcast on the radio or by television will be stopped. This group is also campaigning to remove all Christmas programs and Christmas carols from public schools! You as a Christian can help! We are praying for at least one million signatures. This would defeat their effort and show that there are many Christians alive, well and concerned about our country. As Christians, we must unite on this. Please don't take this lightly.. We ignored one lady once and lost prayer in our schools and in offices across the nation. Please stand up for your religious freedom and let your voice be heard. Together we can make a difference in our country while creating an opportunity for the lost to know the Lord.

Thank you
C

It's a hoax/urban legend or whatever you want to call it. Generally anything that sounds like this usually is. The petition, called RM 2493, was filed nearly 35 years ago, defeated at that time and did not seek to ban religious broadcasting.

Here is an explanation at Snopes.com which is a good place to check on forwarded internet messages such as this.

Petition to Ban Religious Broadcasting

Those hoax emails can be disconcerting.. often with just enough truth to make them sound plausible.

I find that Snopes.com to be a good website for figuring out what are hoaxes and which aren't. My experience with emails also tells me that anything that tells you to forward it to as many people as you can.. is often a hoax or is old enough that it's no longer of use (there are email alerts for missing children that come around periodically where the child mentioned was found years ago)

In this case.. the petition number 2493 was presented in 1974.. it wasn't a ban on religious programing but rather one that wanted to be sure that channels set aside for educational purposes were not being used for religious purposes. And it was defeated in 1975 regardless.

Truth mixed with fiction which makes it sound just plausible enough to make you wonder.

Even if Snopes doesn't have a particular hoax. Often a google search with key words will pull up information about it.

I know lots of people who've needed to find out how to deal with these types of emails and it's no problem to explain it. I'm this familiar with it thanks to relatives that apparently only know how to use the fwd-ing button on their emails

Thank you ladies for your very quick responce. I will follow your links and also send this along to DH who is far better at discerning these things than I am.

Many people have added thier names to this list that is being sent around. I didn't even consider that it could've been a hoax because of the other more current information that lead into this 2nd paragraph info.

Then the third paragraph had personal details of the person to email your list too. I knew some of the names on the list, and it was a very long one. I feel these poor people need to be warned, that this isn't legitimate. I'll discuss what dh wants to do and that will be my course of action.
God Bless Ladies and thank you again.

Whenever I get one of these hoaxes, I always gently inform the person who sent it to me. I received several really nasty ones during the recent presidential elections. I've noticed that some people have stopped sending me these things since then. I don't know if they've become more discerning or if they just don't want to know the truth.
