Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

She is in grade 7. We used F&L from K-6 with a bunch of supplemental materials. Last year she finished F&L early and I bought Image of God's 6th grade text (Old Testament). That was fine, but the I of G grade 7 text is not a big hit. At all. She complains that it's "the same old stuff I already know and have to study year after year." This is her complaint about F&L, too - after 7 years of using those textbooks, she knows most of what is in them.

Switching to a saints biographies program is not the answer - definitely not her thing. She's not a big reader when it comes to nonfiction (animal books excepted).

I'm at a loss. She has to study something!

All suggestions welcome, with my thanks.

Sounds like she knows her faith really well! What about the Beginning Apologetics series? I've always wanted to read them myself.

Nancy~ If she fairly independent?

Are there any of these aspects of the Faith that she is drawn toward and really enjoys???

Apologetics
Saints - you already said "no"
Liturgical Year Celebrations
The Bible
Virtues
Catechism
History
Time Period
Spiritual Life
Art
Music

If yes, could you take that aspect/s and have her really dive into it?

Have you seen Elizabeth confirmation book list? There is enough there for several years!

One of the suggestions is the Inos Biffi catechism books. There are gear to children but I think they are deep enough for the older kids too. Last year I had my then 6th grader, read and write oral narrations.

One thing that I have done is use the books on Elizabeth's list as read aloud at morning time. We read a couple of the Prove it! series and right now, we are reading through Surprised by Truth. We have really enjoyed the conversion stories and they have provided great opportunities to discuss the faith.

Last year we also watched the Footprints of God series. Ignatius press has some study guides in their website that you can use if you want to flesh it out a little more. I didn't use the guides so I don't know if they are good or not.

HTH some,

How about something totally different? Do you have CHC's Middle School Lesson Plans? You could have her spend 2 days a week doing The Virtue Tree study and the other two days a week she could do the Art focused Church History study. Both of these are hands on and have very little reading involved. The first is a journal format, the second is very artistic. She could do some narrations with that, but she could also create a very beautiful Main Lesson Book with maps, the art cards and 3-4 sentence summaries of each century.

On the 5th day, if you school 5 days a week, she could choose a book of the Bible and spend 15 minutes a day copying the text into a journal. When she finishes one book, then start another. And then give her time to do illuminated letters at the beginning of each chapter...maybe listen to Gregorian Chant while doing this?

It has been my experience that my own teens/preteens really enjoy flipping back and forth every couple of years between more catechism focused years and more creative/prayerful years like this.

Hope this helps.

So....she KNOWS her faith.....now....what does she LOVE about it? I know....love is a strong word.....but you know what I mean....she's knowledgable....so now start cultivating her passion, interests, etc. in order to GROW in it....maybe time to "develop her heart" (for lack of other verbiage ) right now?????

If she knows her Faith well, it would maybe be a good idea for her to put her Faith into action. Some suggestions might be to feed the homeless, make baby blankets for pro-life centers, pray the rosary in front of abortion clinics, visit sick babies in the hospitals, visit the elderely. Maybe you could also have her work on her prayer life. The church dedicates the months to certain feasts , have her make a novena each month for that feast. A really fun thing to try is having her act out a skit in which she is challenged about her faith. Try it from different religious beliefs to really challange her. Then you can see if she really knows her faith or not and work on the things she doesn't know well. A great book that you might have her satrt reading would be The Imitation of Christ or the Imitation of Mary. They are full of wonderful thoughts to draw anyone to Christian perfection even for a teenager!:) I hope some of this helps. Good luck to you and you are in my thougts and prayers.

God Bless,
Cheryl

and applying it.. give her a situation she may encounter and have her tell you (write it out or whatever) how and why she'd do what she says.

I'm not fond of this in groups where the situations may be things that a particular child isn't even aware of yet.. but one on one from the parent.. sure.. it would be a good way for her to prove her knowledge.

Why? I mean, you don't have to do formal debates with people, but knowing how to answer when a friend says.. but why do you do that? that's also apologetics.

It certainly sounds like it's time for more active work!

For maintenance/study I would recommend reviewing some catechism every day.

Part of my morning devotions is to read at least one Q&A from the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church as well as read and pray from my copy of Magnificat.

This might work well for her, substituting the Baltimore Catechism #2 questions for the Compendium, and perhaps using one of these books Spiritual Life books as a starting point for prayer and reflecting on scripture. (I have fond memories of starting my daily devotions by using Minute Meditations for Each Day in grade seven.)

Then you have plenty of time to do something different without completely neglecting scripture and catechism.

Maybe her head knowledge now needs to be converted into "heart" knowledge.

Perhaps joining the Altar and Rosary society or the group of women who care for vestments, or other ministries of the Church? She'd be directly experiencing her faith and also be around a lot of older, faithful women.

There's also some great videos available, or even just 'assign' her to watch "The Journey Home" or related programs on EWTN?
