What sort of games and traditions could be incorporated into a St Nicholas party for a large gathering? I noticed that St Nicholas' feast falls on a Sunday this year. I have the book, "Performing Parables" and I noticed they have a play called 'St Nicholas and the Three Dowries' it is a short play and doable with the time we have left, so that this would be the highlight of the day. I'd like to have some games for the children...

This site has quite a few activities, crafts, games and printables St. Nicholas Center I love going through the site and picking out a few new stories, recipes and activities every year.
Here is a description of a simple St. Nicholas party for a large gathering St. Nicholas party (the secret shoe filling sounds fun)

Our TORCH group had a great St. Nicholas party a couple of years ago. The older kids made candy canes and the little ones made candy-cane-shaped cookies. There were coloring pages, a short movie about the life of St. Nicholas, and at the end a visit from St. Nicholas with chocolate coins. I'd really love to do it again, so I'm also eager to hear new ideas!

We've done "Toss the coins into the chimney" game. Fill a cloth bag with coins (pennies) and children try to toss the bag (standing behind a line) into a tall, thin box that has been decorated to look like a chimney.
Also have made this ornament together. It's very easy and a good one for a group activity.
We've stitched together small felt stockings - but I found that a bit of a challenge for a group unless most children are older.

simpler than making candy canes is doing the chocolate covered ones.. you have the melted chocolate to dip in and then they kids can roll them in sprinkles of various types

Hi Annie!
Our St. Nicholas parties have been combined with the Infant Jesus Shop for the last few years. This is a Christmas shopping apostalate for the younger kids, done with a lot of help from the olders. Moms gather gently used and new items that are appropriate for grandparents, parents and siblings, and while the children have a story, do a craft (use the St. Nicholas site) and have a snack other moms and teens set up the "shop."
The kids shop with the help of older siblings and helpers and then get their gifts gift wrapped. The cost of shopping is a can of food and one of our host families delivers this to the food bank.
We had our pastor visit last year and we handed out Candy Canes and did the Candy Cane Blessing prayer found at the site.

If you don't want to put food even wrapped into people's shoes.. or considering the seasonal differences.. flip flops are hard to fill.. I've filled a cheapie plastic cup (like the plastic seasonal cups you can get fairly inexpensively) with the goodies and just set the cup into the shoe (or next to in the case of the tiny shoes)

Well in this case it would be cups sitting in a bunch of thongs! ..being in summer over here.
I love the idea of throwing coins in the chimney!
