I am very excited that our little homeschool group is doing Catholic Mosaic as a monthly meeting this year! I am also excited because I'm organizing it, and this is something I really love. BUT, the first meeting is coming up and we are going to read Peter Claver, Patron of Slaves. One of the components is a craft, and i am really struggling with a craft idea for this one. Any suggestions?

I don't know what age range you are working with, but we just did the Draw and Tell Saint story for St. Peter Claver and the image we drew was a ship since he spent years ministering to the slaves brought by ship to Cartegena. I would think any kind of ship or boat craft would work (paper boats, something like this without the crosses on the sails). Also, any kind of Colombian craft like bead making, pottery, etc... maybe even a coffee bean craft? Hope that help!

I love Charlotte's ship ideas.

Also, depending on the ages of the children, you could make paper chains and talk about how the slaves were kept chained in one place on the boats and then often kept chained together once they were ashore.

Thanks Charlotte and Waverly. Your ideas are inspiring! I'm thinking of using the boat, but making the water bigger. Maybe a collage sort of thing with an image of St. Peter Claver standing on shore. It's in my head so now I just have to see if I can get it to work on paper.
