I've seen the term on Catholic Culture's website but have never figured out what it really means.
Thanks!
Jennifer

Probably more info than you wanted, but here is an article from the Catholic Encyclopedia.

Fr. Hardon's dictionary has a shorter entry:
collect
I remember my father showing me his Latin missal and lamenting that the collect is no longer used. He said they were beautiful prayers.
I thought the collect is the prayer which wraps up the introductory part of the Mass. We now have the prayer the priest reads from the big Missal and then we all sit down. The same prayer is in the breviary for the day. In the breviary it is called the morning prayer. In the evening to conclude prayers, the breviary reads, prayer as in morning prayer. I think this is the equivalent of the collect.
Really good question Jennifer -- now I can find out if I've got my facts straight.

Thank you! We have the collect in the liturgy at my parish (Anglican Use) and now I know what it is.

Helen, that is the understanding that I have, that the introductory or Opening prayer and the prayer used for the Breviary is the same and called the Collecta in Latin, even in the Novus Ordo
Paraphrased from Catholic Encyclopedia by Broderick:
The Collect of the Mass consists of a short prayer, said just before the Liturgy of the Word is read; both are now referred to as Opening Prayer spoken by the priest at the Mass.

Jennifer, I found this little description of the collect prayer as I was searching around this a.m. I don't think it's a Catholic site (ETA:it's Disciples of Christ), but I was interested to see that apparently the collect has a distinct format. Have you ever seen this information? And, yes, the closing prayer in the breviary and the Opening Prayer of the Mass is the same.

That is interesting. I have seen something like that before, but finding out more today in answering this question.
Father Z. discusses format and translations of the prayers, and I think he's mentioned this before. And he refers to the Opening Prayer as Collect, even in the Ordinary Form/Novus Ordo.
