Does anyone have recommendations for a good Bible companion for children? I'm struck when I'm reading the Bible with my children how much the culture is alien to them. So some sort of companion would be fantastic (and would teach me a thing or two, as well!).

We have used a story Bible from DK entitled The Children's Illustrated Bible. It's not Catholic, but it is generically Christian. It has lots of pictures of daily life, cultural information, architectural information, etc. My dd enjoyed it starting around age 9.

Elizabeth, we have a book called "People of the Bible" by Silvia Gastaldi and Calire Musatti, SCM press. One is a baptist and one is a Waldensian - who I didn't even think existed anymore but I find it fine. It goes through the whole Bibl time from Abraham on, and goes through food, women, chidlren, craft, food, travel, religious practise etc, with text and artistic "cartoon" illustrations. I've found it works well for all ages - from sort of 3 up to 13.

Maria von Trapp wrote two books relating to Biblical life and times, particularly in the time of Christ. They aren't illustrated or anything, but nice to read aloud as a chapter book, Let Me Tell You About My Savior: Yesterday, Today & Forever/When the King Was Carpenter. This is a two-for-one.
Yesterday, Today and Forever was printed separately earlier, and weaves in some of the family's stories with Jesus' life.
"When King Was Carpenter" was only printed in the double volume I linked above. This book does less of weaving in Trapp Family, but gives some cultural understanding of daily life in the time of Christ. And her references/bibliography she used lists some other very wonderful reading on the area.
Another book that I personally enjoyed, might not necessarily be for the children is The Family for Families by Francis Filas, S.J. There are very few copies of it on Amazon, but you can read it online at EWTN. Father Filas also wrote many books on St. Joseph; he must have had a great devotion. But they are so lovely to be able to have more for meditation on the foster father of Jesus.

A book I personally love but not exactly what you're asking for is...
The Public Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ by Archbishop Goodier.
His Jesuit practice of meditation shows. The Gospels become a narrative and meditation in Goodier's prayerful book. The seasons, geography and customs are entertwined with the Gospel lessons.
More often I read this book myself. But I have read it aloud to the children.
