I thought it would be good to have my 6yo memorize the answers from the St Joseph (Baltimore) 1st Communion Catechism over the next year, leading up to her 1st Communion. Now that I have the book, I'm wondering which parts people memorize. Each question has a short answer in bold, then a longer explanation. The short answers seem too short for her, and I know she's going to want some explanation and discussion, but the long answers are pretty long. I'm also thinking we'll do the other two books later. If you do memorization of the catechism, what parts do you have them recite? Thanks!

We read and discussed all the material, but the boys were responsible for memorizing only the short, bold answers. We studied all the questions, and reviewed often. It was a good thing the answers were short, because there were quite a few of them. The basic answers can be expanded when you use the other two books. My boys were 5,6, and 6 when we worked on memorizing the questions and answers, and they still remember a lot of them.

We use MODG and they have them memorize the first communion catechism in first grade, then the number 1 book in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, and the number 2 book in 5th, 6th, and 7th. The first communion one has the simplest answers, and they only memorize the bold stuff. Each book gives the same info, only more detail, longer answers, etc. Does that help at all?  That's how we've been using them.
