...Everything Catholic, that is...the whole family is very devout and so they already have most of the "basic" Catholic items.
He loves reading about Catholic philosophy and theology - maybe a book?
All help appreciated. His dad was stumped when I asked him.

It's a good time to give him a "special" item too.. for instance, my daughter had a rosary (a couple actually) but I got her a special one in her favorite color, that's pretty and has a holy spirit center.
a small bible or prayer book with an inscription or his name engraved on it..
something about the saint that he's chosen for his confirmation name?

I was going to write something similar to Jodie. Now it's time for that special gift that he can bring on with him when he leaves. I'm thinking college and marriage. I like to give smaller standing crucifixes (I used to find a San Damiano, but I can't seem to find a standing one anymore). Another idea is small travel icons like this or this or this one or this one (the ones I have are even smaller, like these from this European site) that would be portable. I used to take these and place in front me at the library or on my desk at my office, or in my room. My diptych isn't icons, but Western art, but I haven't been able to track down something similar.
I also like to think of their prayer life, which should become more personal, instead of family-driven.Handbook of Prayers, a Magnificat subscription or Daily Roman Missal. Or a pocket-sized New Testament for meditation reading (dh uses his every day).

I love Jenn's idea of the diptych!!!! Icons seem more "manly."

I love this RSV New Testament and Psalms from Steve Wood's Family Life Center. It's black with a very durable, yet flexible cover, the pages are VERY NICE....silky, durable, with gold edges. The typeset is easy to read considering it's small. Nice a portable. And, it's only $15!! I keep this in my car, and would like another for my living room coffee table.
And, along this same line......how about starting his collection of In Conversation With God Series??? Maybe one or two volumes, and then it would get added to over the next few years for birthdays, Christmas, etc.
I have also given George Weigel's book Letters to a Young Catholic.

I also think something from the name he has chosen.
You could always enroll him in a perpetual Mass type thing. KWIM? If not I can elaborate.

What about something for the car??
Scroll down on this page you'll see a St. Christopher Medal / Scapular for your car. St. Christopher for the Car. I'm getting one of these for dh's car for his b-day.
Also, does he participate in Adoration? There is this book: I, the Lord, am with you, Always
Quote:
The book aims to provide useful material for thought and prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Chapters include the Holy Hour, Eucharistic Hymns, Holy Mass, Preparation for Holy Communion, Thanksgiving, For Children, Mary our Mother, Priesthood and Consecrated Life, Prayers of the People, Perpetual Adoration. |

The Shadow of His Wings
With God in Russia or He Leadeth Me.
Saintly Men of Modern Times
Spiritual Workout of a Former Saint
If he's the outdoor-type: Hunting for God, Fishing for the Lord

Nancy,
Maybe a medal of the saint he has chosen? My sons like to wear a medal of their saint around their neck. I also carry a buch of unique confirmation items on my website here.
Hope this helps
Jody

Have you thought of a holy relic? Cukierski apostolate has some for a reasonable price.

Nancy, do you think he is ready for his own copy of "MY IMITATION OF CHRIST" by Thomas A. Kempis?
p.s. Gloria, what a great and resourceful site, the "Cukierski apostolate"

These are all GREAT ideas! I will try to learn which saint he's chosen and then decide. I want to order all of these books for myself, now, too!
