Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was with dear protestant friends recently and we were discussing the 40 days of Lent. They viewed removing the Lenten fast on Sundays as cheating. Yesterday I went through the Catechism and Sundays are NOT a day of Penance which explains the no fasting.
In the past years we have fasted on Sundays through Lent too. In fact I did not know about the no fast Sundays until a couple of years ago.
So now on Sundays We do not fast but we do try to do something extra for prayer.

Do you ladies continue to fast through the Sundays or not?

And...how would you explain the no penance on Sundays to our dear Christian friends?

Every Sunday is a celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord, so every Sunday is a solemn feast day. Because of our rejoicing over the Resurrection, we do not fast on this day. Lent is a season which helps us grow in holiness through increased self-discipline, prayer, and charity, and it reminds us of the sufferings of Christ and unites us to them, but the victory of His Resurrection is already accomplished and we remember that as well on Sundays.

I can only speak from the Orthodox perspective, but the weekends are normally less restricted in Lent because Saturday is the Sabbath and Sunday is the day of the Resurrection. We keep the fast on Sunday but fast less strictly.
