Question from a non Catholic here.....Just wondering if someone could answer my question...

If i look in the Baltimore Catechism I notice the 10 commandments are of a different order than if I look in the Catholic bible....I also notice this is in St Joseph Picture book. Can someone tell me why?

Dh is Catholic and he is wondering why as well?

Debbie, since you didn't specifically list which commandments you are asking about being ordered differently, I'll assume you are referring to coveting your neighbor's wife being listed before coveting your neighbor's goods. Having just heard the Exodus reading yesterday at Mass this passage is fresh in my mind and I understand your questioning.

This excerpt from the Catholic Encyclopedia explains the numeration system of the Ten Commandments and the variations that exist between Catholic and Protestant listings. It also explains that ordering difference which I think you are referring to. There are two listings of the Ten Commandments in scripture; Exodus 20:2-17 Deuteronomy 5:6-21. This quote from the Catholic Encyclopedia indicates the Catholic preference for Deuteronomy.
"The order, too, is the same except for the final prohibitions pronounced against concupiscence, that of Deuteronomy being adopted in preference to Exodus."

also:
...two specifically different sins are forbidden under covetousness; if adultery and theft belong to two distinct species of moral wrong, the same must be said of the desire to commit these evils.

...and the order in Deuteronomy keeps the covetousness commandments in the same moral order as commandments against adultery and stealing.



That Catholic Encyclopedia article as well as this one at Catholic Bridge are helpful for understanding all the differences one might find - and seeing that they aren't necessarily differences. Since the commandments are not numbered in the Bible themselves, different efforts have been made to number and group them over the centuries. Catholics and Lutherans generally prefer the commandments set out by Augustine and the Eastern Churches and Protestants follow the Commandments set out by Origen.
