My husband wants a new bible. Here are his criteria, do you have any reccomendations?
- Catholic
- lots of footnotes and background information
- more of an academic bible
I'm not sure if this exists. i'm hoping to get it for a belated birthday present for him. Thanks.

I would think the Navarre Bible would be a good fit. Navarre Bible
I haven't used them, but have always wanted to because they are chock full of information. About half the page is actual Scripture, while the bottom half is explination. The one I lined to is the entire New Testament, but its usually done one book of the Bible at a time, because there is just so much in it. I'm not sure if they've done the Old Testement yet. I really need to start this again!

I'd go with the Ignatius Study Bible. It has more factual information and several in-depth study essays. None of the Bible available have enough maps, imho. The commentary on the Navarre is a combination of factual and meditative/Fathers/Saint's type of quotes. They are both great, but Ignatius has more academic info.

How do I put this signature on so it shows up on every post?

One more thought to consider. The Navarre is in several somewhat thick volumes, so it is really not at all convenient to travel with or take to a Bible study. The one-volume Navarre New Testament only has some of the commentary (I know, because I was so excited to buy this volume, and then ended up giving it away because of the abridgement of the commentary). Ignatius Study Bibles are also available in individual volumes, but they are smaller and more portable. I think the plan is to publish a single volume eventually, but I don't know if this has been done yet. I haven't seen it, at any rate.
In Christ,
Caroline

That's good to know, Caroline-- I'll have to look into Ignatius for myself!
