I have come across several references to Mary magdelene and eggs or easter eggs and have noticed in several icons she is holding an egg or red egg but i cant find any books or links to a story explaining this tradition.

Any ideas?

I found other links, but they were similar. Mary Magdalene is such a "hot topic" that I didn't feel like wading through some of the more liberal sites.

I might have something in one of my books, as I remember reading about this at one time. It's interesting how the Ukrainians and Polish and others in the Eastern Christian tradition (Slavic and others) have different types of eggs. The beautiful psyanky or pisanki (Ukrainian and Polish) are blown eggs, not eaten, but the hardboiled eggs that are served are dyed the red. I think they are Krashanky in Ukrainian tradition, not sure of the other names.
