I wasn't raised Catholic, but I did have Catholic friends. Seems like almost every family had a picture near their dinner table of an old man praying at a worn wooden table...I think there might have been a fruit bowl on the table? The whole picture has a mustardy yellowish hue to it. Is there a name for this picture and does it have a significance that I am unaware of? I have been rereading old threads on decorating a Catholic home here and no one mentioned this.
Was it just a coincidence that I saw this a lot as a child?

It is called "Daily Bread." I do not know the origin, but grew up with it as well.

If this is the painting, I found some more out about it. It is called "Grace" and it started as a photo taken in 1918.

Jen,
"How" did you do that research? I've wanted to research an image before and couldn't figure out how to do the search. It's not like you can scan a picture into google...

I am definitely familiar with this picture, but I will concur with Mary G. that I don't assoicate this with something from my Catholic childhood. Don't know when I first saw it but it wasn't something that our Catholic circle of friends had growing up. In the dining rooms I remember, I was much more likely to see a da Vinci "Last Supper", I think.

I haven't seen it, either. I grew up in SoCal.

Wow! I came back to say thanks but it was Sunday. I found it under "Daily Bread" at allposters.com. The information on "Grace" is fascinating. I grew up all over the country (dad was a navy careerman), but I mostly remember seeing it when I was in New England (now that I think about it, I spent a lot of time in MN, too). Maybe its a weird coincidence that I saw it in Catholic homes????

My husband's mom(Catholic) has this picture on the wall, as did my Grandparents(they were Lutheran). We are all in NY and I have seen it in other homes also.

Did you see that it is often paired with a picture called "Gratitude" (not the same artist)
Sold as a diptych at christcentedmall.com (they have several versions, this is just one of them)

Short answer: I got lucky.
I started with a search something like "old man praying at worn table" and found that picture. (I found a few other random pictures too including a Rembrandt - but they didn't match the description.) The person who posted the painting for sale listed the artist's name, but it was spelled wrong and they didn't have the title right. That slowed me down. A lot.
According to my browser history, I then visited my favorite blog (it has ebeth in the title ) and watched a little online tv. When I came back to see if books had checked the image I posted, I saw that "booknbabes" had posted with the title of the painting. The search for "Our Daily Bread painting" was much more fruitful.
Sorry the answer isn't more scientific!
My recommendation: If you are looking for a picture in the future, post it here!

I second that - there always seems to be someone who is able to find the images.

I love searching Google images...but make sure you have your safe filter on--sometimes the most innocuous things can bring up the most eyepopping pictures, unfortunately!

Definitely!
It is simply awful to see those "eyepopping" pictures and even the filter doesn't always work. I usually have the kids turn away whenever I'm using it just in case.
