Did anyone see the JPII movie on CBS tonight? We just finished watching the first of the two parts. I thought it was beautifully done. I was in tears within the first ten minutes. It makes me miss him all the more. The first two hours brought him up to right before his election as pope. The rest will be aired Wednesday.
~Irene (who can't believe that she has commented on a made-for-TV movie not once, but twice in one week, since we virtually never watch network TV!)

DH and I watched it. It was much better than the one that aired a couple of days ago. (Even though I did cry while watching that at the ending with the actual funeral footage.)
From what I read this one was approved by Pope Benedict.
We're looking forward to watching the second part.

I could have written your post! We never watch network TV and here I was glued! I watched it until the wee hours (darn football game). I'm really enjoying it!

The CBS movie on Pope John Paul II that aired last night was the best piece of work I have seen on network television in my lifetime. I was amazed and delighted and can't wait to watch part II. Pope John Paul II's sanctity, character, and love of God permeated the movie, and his teachings were not hidden in the background. I plan to write to CBS to tell them how impressed I was and write down the list of advertisers so that I remember to purchase their products.

I rarely watch TV, but my husband wanted me to watch it with him and I really enjoyed it. We're looking forward to Wednesday night!

I guess I should have added that even though we are taping the movie and had hopes of showing it to the children, I am not sure when we will do so. There are some scenes from the German occupation of Poland near the beginning of the movie that would have been very upsetting to young children. There is also one scene which concerns me in which JPII was going canoeing and camping with students. (Some of you may remember a real black and white photo in which the young Father Wojtyla is sitting in a canoe with glasses on reading a book. They recreated that scene beautifully!) He had a conversation with the young people about sexuality in that scene. It was very well done for adults--just not what I want my girls to hear yet.
If the second half ends up being entirely appropriate, we may let the girls watch the tape from his election to the papacy to the end.
And I agree with Alice. I couldn't have asked for more if a faithful Catholic group had produced the movie. I hope they re-air it, but I haven't heard or read anything about plans to do so.

I agree it was graphic...it seems just unbelievable when you see it portrayed in a real life manner that life people had to endure under Nazi and Communist rule.
Those glasses...it brings back my question as to why didn't JPII wear glasses in his papacy? Where are his glasses!??

You are right. I might not want to introduce that subject to my children yet and would probably skip it for them, but, to me, that was one of the most wonderful scenes in the movie. I found it amazing that a secular network would air a scene in which the young JPII talks about sexuality being "misused" when placed outside the beautiful, profound, and blessed context of married love. He even went so far as to call this misuse of the gift of human sexuality "dehumanizing." At this point in history, the Polish people had been abused by both the Nazis and the Soviets. This prompts one of the young men to comment, "We don't need to dehumanize each other any more." (I paraphrase, but this is the heart of the dialogue.) I was so impressed with this.

Alice, I agree. We watched it together (kids ages 10-17). I had my finger on the mute button (ask my kids - I mute a lot!), but I ended up letting it run - and I think it went over the heads of those kids I would be concerned about. It was, in my opinion, very tastefully done, yet very powerful.
I'm looking forward to seeing the second part on Weds.!
