We are attending the baptism of a child who only has one practicing Catholic parent. The other is a self-professed atheist. I am looking for ideas for gifts since I usually like to give gifts that represent the child's name saint. We have given religious gifts before and then never seen them again. These parents are the kind that don't allow any kind of clutter, keepsakes, or knick-knacks... if it doesn't fit with the planned decor, then it doesn't stay. Any ideas?

How about a book? You could do a nice Tomie DePaloa. (I always mess up the spelling of his last name) The Clown of God is a favorite of mine. Or what about one of the Waldorfish night light covers, some have an angel design on them. You could also give an item for a Nativity set.

How about having Masses offered for the child - there are some societies that will offer Masses for several years for a small stipend. You could choose to let the parents know or not depending on sensitivity issues.
Then, perhaps a beautiful Tasha Tudor picture book? A favorite is A Time to Keep, but there are many with a religious theme.

Would a nativity set be considered clutter? That has been a gift from godparents. Beginning nativity like Fontanini, or perhaps a German wooden set or beginning pieces, that you can add over the years.

If they aren't into keepsake, perhaps a gift card to a book store or for a dinner out.
