Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Lately, my 5 year old is asking so many questions about martyrs and martyrdom. It seems to be tied in with the aspect of sacrifice, since we're doing a little focus on that with the straws in the manger.

But he's really plying me with questions, and going through our book Saints: A Year in Faith and Art and finding all that say "martyr". In the car he wants to hear how the apostles died, who else was a martyr, were OT saints martyrs if they died, etc.

My head is spinning. I know it's his age with the constant questions. I'm just wondering if it's a little over the top with the fascination of death and executions. I spare the gory details and try to not dwell too much, but the questions keep coming.

Some of it, too, is the learning of a new word, how it sounds, and the associations, as he has a habit of doing this. The way he sounds out Martyr cracks me up.

Anyway, just looking for reassurance that my son isn't going Goth at age 5.

Welcome to little boyhood Jenn!!! Be glad this is all in the context of martyrs for his faith!

Have no fear if he should "act" out anything either. A friend of mine said she saw all this death stuff more as a way to test courage and practice courage. Little girls play mommy, play at their compassion. Little boys are practicing and playing out their courage. So it may seem doomy, but to them, it's the opposite (if that makes sense?)???

Makes total sense. Thanks for the reassurance. I had a feeling it was a "boy" thing.

And I have seen the reenactment. The sword through the stuffed animals, chopping off heads...

Sounds normal to me, lol. Just recently we were looking through pictures at Art.com of St. George, and while I was distracted, ds4 clicked on an image of the martyrdom of St. George and the beheading of St. George. Ack! They were paintings, but explaining it did result in SONGS about St. George killing the dragon AND losing his head. I felt like I had a medieval troubadour around the house for a couple of weeks.

Don't know if it's normal (but I hope it is!), but my 6yo will put the Mr. Potato Head's eyes between her fingers and show them to me, palm up-"Look, Mom! I'm St. Lucy and here are my eyeballs!"
