Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am so frustrated with our library....they have a limit of 2 books per library card on christmas/holiday books We don't have a lot of books we own as I use the library heavily.

Looks like we won't be able to use many of the Christmas Mosaic books for Advent. By the end of this week all the books will be checked out...more than likely for the next 3 weeks.

I am so sad...

Oh, that's such a bummer! Can you start reserving/requesting a few titles you want?

Here are some ideas:

Can you go to the library more often? Two at a time, twice a week maybe?

How about looking at the books you hoped to do and pick two a week? Anchor the books to correspond to the feast day. This week to correspond with feasts, perhaps a St. Nicholas Book, next week Our Lady of Guadalupe (both Immaculate Conception and OLGuad covered by that book).

Just a few thoughts. And perhaps you can do some used book shopping at local stores or used book or white elephant sales to add a few titles to your shelf. I always pray to my guardian angel to send a title or two that would be the right fit.

That's a terrible policy to have...so lopsided. On one hand, there's the idea of no restrictions, free access to all information, yet....

it's the same in many places.. a restriction on the number of books from one category so that others also have access to those books.

another idea.. how many library cards can you get? you and your dh.. how about the kids? any old enough to be allowed to get a library card? at least you and your dh would give you a book a week for Advent.

We have a Catholic thrift store, that usually sets out all of the holiday books together. And, they are cheap! Do you have anything like that in your area?

That would frustrate me so much! I LOVE our library!

Sending you book prayers!

I second the idea of everyone in your family having a library card. We have six here, and they are all used heavily!!

We do the "everyone-has-a-library-card" too....even the 6-month-old.

I'm so sorry! I hope you find a solution! Maybe you could find a friend to check out, trade and trade back? Then you could double the number of books in the same amount of time? Don't know if this helps! I need to get myself in gear and find out our library's policy! I might have the same problem

I feel for you my dear... that would be a huge suffering for me. I hate even jumping in this conversation because as many here know our library system has no such restrictions what-so-ever and I currently have probably way more than my share of Christmas books checked out. Wish there was some way to funnel you through our system.

thanks ladies...I already have 4 cards but at 2 books per card that only gives me a small amount of books to get me through December. I know last year they did not implement this policy...and I am wondering if it's for ME only maybe they see me as a book hog??? I do check out a lot.

the only thing I can hope for at this point is that the books I want will be there when I want them. I think I will have to make a couple trips a week to get the books we want. It's only about a 10 minute drive through town. They have a 3 day hold limit on books but if I can talk them into holding them a couple more days then I think I can balance it all out.

I understand the policy and why it's in place but it makes for very difficult planning. I have a huge stack of books on the hold shelf I had requested for the rest of December..now I have to go to the library..go through them and pull out the ones I want and send the rest back to the shelves It isn't like I was going to keep them the whole time.....I would have a huge stack going back as we finished with them.

Hi Debbie,
Our library has the same policy, except it's 4 books. Is your library part of a county wide system. You could try putting books on hold through another library, they probably won't let you put on hold any books at your library, but at least you could get around the 2 book policy. Your library system most likely has a website to do this at.
As for being a bookhog, my 18yodd works at the library and knows they would rather have the books checked out or they have more to dust and remove from the shelves if they haven't been being checked out enough. The only thing they don't really like is people who bring up a huge pile of things right at closing time!!!
God bless and Happy Advent,
Mry-NY

Well.....I am still frustrated. The circulation manager is being difficult....I really think she dislikes the fact I use the library as much as I do. The rest of the librarians are great though. She actually told me last night that she likes to discourage anyone from checking out too many books

I might have called a bit of attention to myself though....I actuallly requested more books than I realized and then they ALL came in at the same time from the surrounding libraries......I sure hope she doesn't continue to give me grief in the future.

I feel your pain, Debbie - our library stinks! They don't even offer most of the books I look for on a regular basis and absolutely nothing Catholic. Sigh.

I keep my eyes open for used book sales, and my generous husband sets aside a nice amount for us in a book fund. I buy a lot used...cause' I can't check them out of the library! I've just spent the years collecting classics a little at a time. I wish we had a nice library system here...

Seems like a strange attitude for a LIBRARIAN . Our librarians like me because I help keep their branch circulation numbers up !

I am wondering if you could read some of the books on one of the online libraries? I don't know if they would have the books you are looking for but it might be worth trying.

Is there another family you could trade titles with? That way you could each check out the maximum and share.

Also, do you have family in a nearby county? Maybe they could check out books for you in their system and you could double your books on hand.

We have been collecting Catholic titles since my youngest was born 26 years ago (I can't believe this as I type it) and I remember when we had very few. I have found some wonderful books on BookCloseOuts, their Christmas books are on sale now and they have free shipping.

One more thought, could you request more titles than you are allowed to check out and read some at the library, then check out the limit you are allowed. That seems to make sense because if you were looking for information about a topic, perhaps for a paper, you might request a lot of titles, then check out the ones that were of use.

I hope you enjoy your Advent reading!

We have a four book limit also - I supplement some of the true *Christmas* books with those that have a winter theme or other fairytale books that have a more Christmas mood - a lot of Jan Brett books are very nice for this time of year but not specifically Christmas books.

My last trip I got out "Annie and the Animals"(we put out treats for the birds) "Pasquels Kitchen Angels" (for before a baking day) and the "Tomten" (I just love the Tomten ).

I also look for old anthologies of Christmas stories - right now I have "Merry Christmas to You" compiled by Wilhelmina Harper - these sweet stories don't need pictures! And I think it is good for children to be able to listen without visuals all the time.

Also think of famous author anthologies - Dickens, Alcott, O Henry...these bigger books have Christmas stories but do not look like Christmas books and so I slip some of those in.
