Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am looking for a book for my children about Mass - the Mass itself and the items used during Mass. I need it for my little ones - ages 7, 5, and 3.

I think there was a thread on this before but I couldn't find it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Maria Montessori has an excellent book, the Mass Explained to Children.

It was written pre Vat II, obviously, but has lots of useful info on the meaning of the Mass, what is necessary for the Mass (with drawings and explanations), etc.

Thanks for the suggestion. I went on line to look at the Mass Explained to Children and the description says it is for children 8 - 15. Would you agree? I'm looking for something for younger kids.

I also saw when looking at the Mass Explained to Children the book The Mass Book for Children by Gortier. Do you know anything about this book? It looked like it was for younger kids.

A Peek Into My Church. This is a great picture book that little ones love. With good drawings/illustrations of the items used during Mass. There are some questionable things in it....that have been discussed here.

The Mass Book For Children.

A Child's Missal by Patmos. OOP, but I seem to remember it's available on line somewhere. This isn't so much about the ITEMS used at Mass, but the "mystery" of the Mass through its symbols and rituals. I originally thought this would be above my dc's head....at the time ages 6,5,4.....but they LOVED it and still do.

I read it to our kids. I actually think it's way too young for a 15 yo!

It's written as if Dr. Montessori was speaking to the children herself. I would peg it about K-3rd grade. Montessori does use literary language, but if you read older classics it shouldn't be anything the kids are unfamiliar with.

Here's a sample passage, from the vestments section:

I. The Amice. This is a white linen cloth which in ancient times served to cover the head, and is now worn around the neck and over the shoulders. The word "amice" comes from the Latin and means a covering. It is like a little hood. In its mystical meaning, it is the helmet of salvation, almost like those steel helmets which soldiers put on to protect their heads.

and a sample paragraph from the Sacred Vessels section:
This piece of white linen is called the Corporal (from corpus, Latin for body). It has the great honour of touching the Body of Christ, because the priest lays the Sacred Host down on it. The Chalixe also rests on the unfolded Corporal, so that if a drop of the Blood of Christ should get spilled, it would fall on the Corporal. You can understand now that the Corporal is a most sacred cloth.

We just bought "The Marian Sunday Missal" for our 6 year old son who is reading very well. It was the only one they had at the church and I was so excited to see all it has inside. The introduction includes b&w illustrations and descriptions of the following: The altar and its furnishings- altar cards, candle sticks, etc.., Sacred Vessels- Chalice, Montstrance, etc.. Vestments- Amice, Alb, etc.. Color of Vestments, purpose of the Holy Mass, why we should use a missal, parts of the Mass and breakdown of each, how to use the missal. The ordinary of the missal also includes color pictures of the passion and death of Our Lord. I am very happy with it and my 6 year old is so excited and reading it on his own. This is a 1962 version missal, but it does not have the latin, only English. I wish it had the Latin, but the color pictures of Our Lord are nice to have for him at this age. He is hoping to make his first Holy Communion in the spring.
-Ask the Holy Ghost to guide you to the right book for your children.
P.S. I also recommend "The Mass Explained to Children".
and perhaps there is a CGS book that might help, although I am barely starting to look into CGS myself and don't know too much. God Bless you!

Suzanne, I cannot find a link to the missal! We saw it at our church's bookstore among a lot of thicker missals and it seemed perfect for our son. It was the only one they had, but I can ask where they got it if anyone is interested. I only wish it had the Latin on one side, but it's good for now! Here is the information on the missal:

The Marian Sunday Missal
Compiled by Sylvester P. Juergens S.M.
Imprimatur 1962
By Regina Press
418 pages

I'll post pictures if anyone would like.

-Susana
P.S. In the back of the missal it has a Liturgical Calendar section, but it only goes up to 1977 for some reason. Maybe it is old? It is in brand new condition and we only paid $12.50 for it! Hmmm???
