Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Do you cross yourself when you pray the Glory be? (This may be a really silly question; sorry!) I will be praying one decade of the rosary tomorrow with my Little Flowers and some of them do. As a convert, I'm still learning all these little things.

I don't know that it's "required" or not...
but I know for me and several of my kids, the minute we hear/say the word "Father.." our hands just automaticly start to do the sign of the cross.

I think Martha may be on to the reason it sometimes happens with my children. Sounds similar, especially to a child!

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit..............

We don't make the sign of the cross when praying the Glory Be - I never learned it that way (cradle Catholic) but I do notice that some in our homeschool group do. I think it could be like Michaela said - an automatic action with the similar wording.

Yes, what Mary wrote... succinctly.

I think it's fine either way - definitely not something that has to be done.

This question has made me curious as well - in some searching I found a source that says the Eastern rite Catholic churches (and Eastern Orthodox) will motion the sign of the cross when praying the Glory Be. I'm trying to confirm that in some other sources.

When our new pastor arrived, we all noticed that he crosses himself during the Glory Be...so now our whole parish does it and I just never have...hmmm...interesting note about the Eastern Churches, Mary M...I am curious, too..

One can never cross themself too often!    Yes, we do and always have. It is how I learned to pray the Glory Be as a covert.

In the convent I was a postulant in, they always did a sort of bow forward at the Glory Be during the Liturgy of the Hours. I actually visited with a Discalced Carmelite community too and they did the same.

In Mexico it is customary to cross yourself at the Glory Be. My parents and siblings were born there, so I am accustomed to doing it :)

I don't. I learned it in kindergarten or first grade at Catholic school so had it been taught that way I think it would have become deeply ingrained in me.

If I understand correctly there are only so many things that are strictly "required" and many other things are tradition/custom/good habit/application of principle. Like saying grace before meals.

My friends who cross themselves at the Glory Be are Mexican-American. In our area it is one of those small cultural differences, like kissing your fingers after crossing yourself.

It's fine to do it, and fine not to.

Another question:

When you pray just one decade of the Rosary do you pray:
1. Sign of the Cross
2. Our Father
3. Ten Hail Marys
4. Glory Be
5. Fatima prayer
6. Sign of the Cross

Is that all?

Another thing. We usually pray this just sitting quietly in a circle with folded hands or holding our rosaries. Should I require anything else: kneeling, etc.? They are 4 to 8 yo girls.

Okay, Leah, here's my answers to all your questions.

1) I don't sign when I say the Glory Be, never have. Like Rebecca, I was in a religious order as a postulant and they bowed when they say the Glory Be, especially during the Liturgy of the Hours, so that's the only practice I've done with the Glory Be.

Since you're in a teaching possibility, I think it would be better to NOT do the sign of the cross, so that the focus can be on learning how to pray the rosary.

2) There is no set pattern to saying one decade of the rosary. As a family when we're abbreviating because of short attention spans we have done your way:

RamFam wrote:
1. Sign of the Cross
2. Our Father
3. Ten Hail Marys
4. Glory Be
5. Fatima prayer
6. Sign of the Cross

Except add the Hail Holy Queen as #6, then Sign of Cross will be #7. But we have also expanded and started with the Sign of the Cross, Creed, Our Father, 3 Hail Marys, Glory Be, Fatima Prayer, then the decade of the rosary, then Fatima prayer, Hail Holy Queen, then sign of the Cross.

Clear as mud?

3) As a family, we do various postures for prayer. No strict rules about it. I want my child to participate willingly, not feeling forced. Sometimes we kneel, but usually we sit and pray. Do what is comfortable, or ask the girls to do what is comfortable for them.

Thanks, Jenn!

I think I will add the Hail, Holy Queen and not cross at the Glory Be. I always think of that as the beginning and the end.

I am Byzantine Catholic and we bless ourselves at every mention of the Holy Trinity.
