Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Yesterday I had an insight that will make it easier for me to explain to my children what is meant by avoiding the near occasion of sin.

I noticed that I had taken the trash can out of the kitchen and put it in the mudroom behind a gate. Why? So the dog wouldn't be tempted by the chicken carcass inside.

It struck me that sometimes we need to put temptations (bad books or friends or places) "behind the gate" to help ourselves be good. Sometimes we could be the temptation for someone else to sin, and so need to be aware and change (our behavior, dress, etc.).

Just thought I'd share, as First Penance time is approaching for many families. The full post is on my blog if you're interested.
