Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What would you say to a friend if they were a life long Roman Catholic, and they told you they were seriously considering converting to the Eastern Orthodox Church?

thank you,

"I'm sorry??"
sorry for myself for losing the unity I had with her as mutual Catholics, but also sorry because there must be some hurt or something that has occured to cause this decision...

and then,
"can you share with me what led you to this decision?"

lastly
"I'm praying for you!"

just off the top of my head....

I probably wouldn't use the "I'm sorry" part simply because it can come across as sarcastic or insincere even when that's no where near your intention.

Definately the other things Lisa said.

But also if possible work in there asking her if she's given as much study time to the Church she's leaving as to the one she's considering.

Is it a done deal? I would really ask for the reasons. You might be able to help this person sort out why they are doing this.

Is it disillusionment with the current state of the Church or Her liturgy? Certain bad personal experiences with clergy?

Is it a form of rebellion, not wanting to follow the Pope?

Is it disbelief in some of our teachings?

Some solid resources to help you discuss some things with your friend:

If I was caught off guard, I don't know! I hope I would thank the friend for entrusting me with such personal information, ask if she had a Roman Catholic priest to talk with and encourage her to do so, and say that I love her and my church very much and would be sad to see her leave.

Prayers for all involved.

Love,
