Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ladies,
I need help with my ds10 who becomes very emotional when hearing about the sufferings that saints have endured for their faith and vocations.

For example, we owned the Glory Stories for a couple of years before he could listen to them w/o getting red-faced angry and crying. Now he enjoys them - but still gets upset now and again depending on his mood.

This school year he is in 4th grade. At 10, lots of kids are in 5th, but due to his perfectionist nature, I've held him back to reduce his stress. It has worked very well for us both.

However! For religion, we are doing the RACE for Heaven study guide to the MF Wyndyatt books and St. Thomas of Aquinas is the first book. On chapter 3 today after hearing about St. T being shut up in a tower for 18months my son lost it again. My son had a good night's sleep. He just had lunch. He has had plenty of exercise etc. So nothing physiological. But he got very angry, tried to get up and leave, was sarcastic, red-faced and crying. Obviously very emotionally attached to the story.

I pray to my guardian angel for strength during the school day. And his too. So I felt like I managed the situation okay. I didn't lose it. So that is something.

My question boils down to this:
Am I pushing too hard too soon for the concept of "suffering is a gift"???? I thought that this book and study guide was age appropriate. Am I missing something here or is my son just going to need to suffer and grow a little through this??

Thank for your help in advance.

how does he feel about things after his first flush of anger is over?

perhaps he just needs to have some warning about what you'll be reading before he hears it in the story?

It sounds like he has a keen sense of justice, too, and frustrated when he can't DO something to help the situation.

I personally don't like the Windeatt books. They seem to manipulate stories in the lives of saints to make a point. I think it's overdone and plays on the emotions.

Have you previewed other saint stories (Joan Windham, Ethel Marbach Pochocki, 57 Saints, Encounter the Saints) to see if being less graphic would not upset him so?

I like the idea of RACE but sometimes a child doesn't need the point to be spoonfed. Reading the lives of the saints should inspire and connections should be naturally made by the child, not be so artificial.
